PSA for French owners

According to the Velo Orange site, the Stronglight A9 headset has been discontinued, but they still have some with French threads.

They were selling for $28.65 at xxcycle.com until they ran out. They still have the black A-9 ST in BSC for $11.84.

Yeah, I checked xxcycle before I ordered. They seem to have good pricing generally, even with a weak dollar. Do you know if any other mfgr. is still making a threaded French HS, or is this it?

I think that was it. I've got one French A-9 left and it's missing a crown race.

I got one of the steel A-9's, and the only thing that's the same is the outward appearance. It is heavy and uses ball bearings - vice the needle bearings. I'm going to have to flip a few more bikes and pay handsomely for a real one sometime this year.

I have three French bikes right now, but the '74 PA10 I just got from robtown turns out to have a BSC-threaded steerer with a that takes a French stem. I ended up using a French A-9 crown race with an otherwise BSC A-9 headset. It's good to have some spare parts. The replacement races and bearings are expensive.

I've seen the complete discontinuation of French headsets coming for a good time now, and have a sizable stash of NOS and still good used headsets. I'd say about 10-15 NOS ones and another 20 used ones. Same with bottom brackets.

I think I'm okay on French HS and BBs until I die.

The original steel Stronlight headset on my '74 PX10 shows no visible signs of wear, but I've got a spare just in case.

I've got pleanty of spare French cups, but I need to find some spindles to go with them.

Aren't French spindles the same as English?

Curiosity question here...can I use a different fork and not need the French threaded headset? FWIW the frame in question is a low end early 70's Motobecane and I am not even sure that the current headset/fork is OEM.

Cool strategy. 15 years from now, when no one else can imagine being able to find the parts to make them rideable, you'll be able to pick up French frames for a song. Or sell bottom brackets and headsets for a bundle.

BSC - British standard components?

Also, after Stronglight stopped making the A9 in French thread, has anyone else manufactured them? What are a newcomer's options--scour parts from UO-8's, or wait for Velo-Orange to pick up the slack?

..bump! Also, was the specific headset the JD A9? Does the "JD" specify French threading?

Thanks.
