campy Front chain rings

I have a campy 8 speed group set. I want to change the front inner ring as it is a 42 tooth and would like to put a 39 or smaller on.

My Question is: do I have to put an 8 speed campy one on or is there an alternative one I can use.

Thanks

Stronglight, QBC, and a few others have made chainrings for Campagnolo's proprietary 135mm BCD. You cannot go smaller than 39T, but 39 will noticeably reduce the pedal efforts in your bottom gears.

Edit: I just checked the Harris site and did not see anything cheaper than Campagnolo. Keep watching eBay for good used or shopworn NOS 39 or 40T chainrings with a 135mm BCD.

I suppose this is a little late, but you can often buy a complete 8 speed campy crankset cheaper (for some unfathomable reason) than you can buy NOS chainrings, especially if you don't need (and you really don't) the top end stuff. Look for Veloce.

I just bought 2 new 10spd Veloce compact cranksets on Ebay for $40 each including (free) shipping. So far I put one on an 87 Bianchi and after bit of fiddling it's working fine.
