Whadayathink? I got it for $30 from a disabled vet cleaning out his storage locker before a move
I plan to clean it and replace a few things; make it my pet project for the next few months. I only plan on doing a few things myself. The rest I'll trust to a pro. I think the biggest changes will be to scrap the deraileurs and replace the wheels/tires. The rest is just minor fit and comfort stuff (tape, saddle, etc.) Any tips on cleaning the chrome parts?

Great buy!
Those are the best derailleurs of that era. I'd take them over Campy -- far superior design. Clean them and lube them and they'll work great.

I may actually try them out. Initially, I thought of converting to single speed/fixed flip flop. Thanks for the info. This bike will be my tinker toy/tutorial of sorts for a few things, and the first is how to clean it properly!

I sold my 1979 Gran Tourer to my brother. He loves it. Great riding bicycle. I would highly recommend not turning it into a fixie. Restore it and ride it. I like your yellow color, too.

Yeah. I've seen several in the shop when I was shopping for my commuter. Can't say they are the nicest folks, but once I get past being treated like crap for being a newbie, they are very knowledgeable. I'm going to try my best to have educated questions lined up before I go and be clear about what I'm going to use the bike for. Im also a previous customer, so hopefully that will help.

In the shop for a good drivetrain cleaning and tune up. Mechanics said that most things were in good shape, so no extensive repairs. Got some new tires, but the derailer, chain and cables were all in good working order. Brakes are good too, and the pads are brand new. The wheels were out of true but in good shape. Crank and bottom bracket just needed oil. The rest is cosmetic.
I've got some ugly white cable casings...is there anything I can do to replace them short of replacing the entire cable? Paint or cover perhaps?
Also any tips for cleaning up the chrome pieces? the brakes and some of the brakets have a touch of rust developing. Would I have to remove them and sand/buff to return the shine or is there some sort of topical product?

Got it back already! I just dropped it off hours ago and because of a mixup in the shop, I got bumped ahead of about 20 bikes! I'll post pics when I get it polished up.
