1960 Scwhinn Racer.....what should I do with it?
I found this bike on Craigslist for free so I grabbed it. It's an old Schwinn. It's dirty and rusty. The fenders are beat to hell(actually the front is pretty good, the rear fender is smashed) and the spokes are bent/loose.
I did some searching and from what I can find it is that it was made in Chicago on July 26, 1960.
If it were you, would you restore/fix this bike up? Give me your suggestions.

Do you want or need a beater? Step-through frames are practically theft-proof.
If I were going to ride it, I would add a front brake and a 3- (or more-) speed coaster hub.

Well I only have one bike, no back-up bike. I kinda was toying with the idea of fixing it up for the wife to ride. Still not sure.

Even tho I'm a Schwinn guy, I'd can that one.
While every man needs and deserves one or more beaters, that one's a single-speed coaster (or worse-yet, possibly an early Sturmey Archer 3-spd coaster but I can't see that from the left side) so personally I'd have to make it a 3-spd with a lot of stuff from a dfonor bike: S/A AW rear / shifter / cable / pulley / fulcrum sleeve & clamp, and a pair of caliper brakes and levers. The two-color "S" seats aren't comfortable for me so I'd need one of the DeLuxe mattress seats from a donor.
Geeze, I might just as well ride the donor.
All that said, you might feel attached to it so do what you want.

What alf said. Old Elecroforged Schwinns are great -- I've got two -- but there are more useable ones to be had if you look. On the plus side, you can probably flip that one for $50-$75 just the way it sits.

Look over this website for lots of tips, info, & help. Great bunch. There are about 4 forums listed at the top from old Schwinns.

I have a few schwinns of that age and I love them. yours looks like crap but that can be a good thing too. I'd say pump up the tires or replace them probably with iso-579 s-6 tires, lube the chain and ride it for the summer. at the end of the summer then you can decide what to do with it. a good functioning ugly bike is a nice townie. do you need more than one gear in vegas? it's pretty flat right?
