Potential Miyata purchase...whats it worth? *pics*

I know a guy selling this..he wants 50 bucks..not sure of the size...where should I tell him to measure to measure frame size? Anyone know what model this is, or what it's value is? Is it worth 50 bucks?

It's a rare upside-down Miyata! Definitely not high end with stamped dropouts and low-range components. If it's your size, at $50 you could make a good basic bike out of it.

It's late 1970's. it's entry level, but not bottom of the line. The rear derailleur appears to be one of SunTour's Seven or V series, not the low end Honor or GT. The front derailleur is definitely not the bottom end Spirt or Compe-V, maybe an SL or Seven. Brakes are almost certainly Dia-Compe centre-pull. The crank is cotterless, as opposed to cottered. Hard to tell if the rims are steel or aluminum. But still it has stem shifters. The frame is probably hi-tensile, at best a plain gauge CrMo main triangle with hi-tensile stays. Could be a Liberty. Size looks to be about 23". If it's in good mechanical shape, it would probably go for about $25-$35 but there can be quite a variation, depending on the market conditions in your region.

Stem shifters were typically low end, yes? Was this to suit a leisurely rider? Just like the suicide brake levers? Not a fan of the stem shifters.

I don't think stem shifter were necessarily low end... I recall buying an Azuki in the Mid 70's with Stem shifters, very nice bike. I think they came out and were a bit of the 'rage' (like suicide brake handles), and then the rage passed.

For a while, some very high end road bikes (Bottecchia and the like) had NO braze ons for water bottles (even tho racers and riders needed to drink water), so we ruined many 'o paint job with hose clamped bottle cages.

Looks an awful lot like this Miyata Americana out in the barn:

For a low-end bike boomer it's pretty nice. The tubing sticker reads 'made with Hi-tensile BUTTED tubes' (which makes me giggle ), the DRs are Sun Tour VGT/CompeV, shifters are stem mount power ratchets, cranks are Shimano Tourny, the only down side are the steel rims. It it fits (measure the seat tube from the centerline og the crank spindle and the centerline of the toptube junction) it's most likely worth 50 bucks, but I'd offer 25 and work from there.
