Joe Bell paint job mystery bike

OK- I got some feedback on another post about this bike. I was able to grab it up today. It has a Joe Bell Paint job, which is kind of chipped and beat up. the garage sale I saw it at was not a messy garage, so I wonder how it got so beat up. The fork is very attractive, and has tange dropouts. Is it a tange? mix match shimano derailleurs, unknown brake levers, campy downtube shifters, suntour cranks, normandy high flange hubs on mavic rims, 5 spd cassette. The frame has Zeus Competition dropouts as best I can tell. there's also a serial number on the rear drop, 31693 or 31699 as best I can tell, it is painted over and worn from the skewer. there's also a 60 on the headtube, but it might say something else, it is also painted over. The rear cable mount between the seatstays, above the brake mount, resembles a raleigh I have. nice BB lugs, here's the pics:
There's also a nice pump mount braze on, and the headbadge is gone!!!!! 3 holes left. No underneath BB stamping other than what looks like TT or TI

I would ask Joe Bell. Isn't the rear brake cable stop a Raleigh signature?

Sure is. Looks like a Professional.

so, then can I deduce, with no knowledge of historic Campy parts, guess that those are some kind of record shifter?

Frame, Raleigh Gran Sport 531 double butted, replacement fork, original had Wagner crown.

So it goes.

Looking thru sheldons raleigh catalogs....
none of them have the pump mount on the seat tube, they all have chrome clamp on style ones....
these are such fun things to try and find.
I think the raleigh paint scheme is way better than JB's

With that drilling on the headtube, there's little question about it being a Raleigh.

The lugs certainly look like a Gran Sport's - but it doesn't explain the braze-on shifter mounts or the pump peg. Probably brazed-on before the Bell paint job. Come to think of it, I don't believe even the last U.S.-variant incarnation of the Professional had braze-on mounts, let alone the Gran Sport.

Beats me where the fork came from too. Let me know if you want an original Gran Sport fork that I believe will fit your bike. Cost of shipping only. You'll have to dunk the steerer tube in lye to remove the stuck stem, but it is pretty much intact otherwise.

Since it was repainted a braze-on for the pump would be easy to add. Also could be a slightly different model year. And Raleigh wasn't exactly perfect in the catalog details with what they shipped. It's definitely a Raleigh.

That brake cable stop may be a Raleigh signature, but you won't find one on a Pro. I've seen a very similar one on a Gitane TdF, but I'm not suggesting that it's a Gitane.

Maybe Joe Bell painted that one when he just started out and was using rattle cans.

Well, I'm disappointed with that paint job. Maybe Joe was subbing bikes out to Earl Scheib! Or One Day Paint! If it is a Raleigh, where is the serial no? Also, no pic of the seat stays/seat lug area.

And pics of the rear dropouts would help, too.

Great feeedback! You guys are awesome. I didn't take rear drop pics, but the say zeus competition on them, and the serial number is hard to read with the paint. I was torn with whether to chip the paint away to read it better, I almost think that the raleigh paint job underneath, and the chrome would look cooler. I basically looked thru sheldon's catalog archive for the pump braze on, didn't se any consistencies. Also saw a later 70's professional that didn't have the brake cable stop on it. I'll take some other pics later today maybe.

I agree, I wonder how uch it cost. I also wonder if he traded out forks maybe for a cleaner, easier, look, and scores a raleigh fork.

That is very kind of you to offer, I doubt I can ethically accept, b/c I wil probably sell this one, due to nasty paint, sorry JB, in order to pay for other projects. But when it is in the pile at the dump, ready to get dentd and bent, I gotta make room in my garage for it. If I change my mind, maybe, btu it would be for a gift anyway if I don't sell it....

Did Raleigh ever use Zeus dropouts?

Sigurdd50 06-01-08 11:52 AM

This is the Skittles Colour Scheme?
