Cyclists apologize for brawling after Stage 6
By JEROME PUGMIRE, AP Sports Writer 11 hours, 24 minutes ago
LES ROUSSES, France (AP)—Carlos Barredo and Rui Costa have apologized to each other for their punch-up after Friday’s sixth stage of the Tour de France, and race organizers say the matter is now closed.
Tour organizers said before the start of Saturday’s stage that Spain’s Barredo of the Quick Step team and Portugal’s Costa of Caisse d’Epargne had settled their differences.
“The two cyclists have apologized. They shook hands this morning, the incident is thus closed,” Tour organizers said, adding that the violent clash was “inadmissible” and it “can’t be accepted by the cycling world.”
Barredo charged toward Costa near the finish line and attempted to strike him over the head with a bike wheel. The pair then traded blows before grappling on the ground.
The first week of the Tour saw numerous spills and crashes, and the extreme heat meant tempers were always at breaking point as riders tried to jostle for the front positions to stay out of imminent danger.
“Everybody wants to be at the front, and everybody feels like they deserve their spot and nobody should come over on them,” seven-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong said on Saturday. “There’s guys who never touch their brakes, there’s guys who are quick to touch their brakes. Inevitably, you get a hot long day like that and somebody cracks someone else.
“It starts with a few words, then it’s a push, then it’s a swing, and then the front tire comes off.”
Both riders completed Stage 7.
