Wald Baskets - Old vs. New
I was curious if the new Wald baskets are the same dimensions as the old?
I'd like an old rear double basket to put on my '66 Schwinn Collegiate to keep it as period as possible, and was just wondering if there's an easy way to tell old from new (besides condition, kind of hard to tell with ebay pics). Did Wald make different sizes of rear baskets in the 60's and 70's?
Thanks!

Ryan,
I have several old double baskets I've pulled from dump finds. They all appear to be the same size. I've not seen any of the new ones. You are welcome to one for the cost of shipping. They do show their age but I'd say they are all from the late '60s through mid '70s. I wonder if a good cleaning and a silver powder-coating would they look nearly new? PM me if you are interested.

I have used Wald baskets since the early 70's, the sizes have not changed. They are the same baskets we bought back then...still made in the USA to! They have added a few newer baskets to their line up, like the folding rear baskets and the mesh front. But the big silver saddle baskets are exactly the same.

I have one too. It's great! The thing I like best is that it fits on a Blackburn Mtn. Rack, so I can slide the Wald on and off, and move it from one bike to another. Though it would look great on the Sekai tandem...I'll have to keep my eyes open for a second one this summer.

Ahh not so fast young ones. I bought what I thought was the double baskets I had on my old Schwinn for my daughters retro (read new) model and it was pretty small. I found out there are, from my searches two or three different sizes. I think Wald has a website check it out

Yes, those big WALD double sided baskets are sweet - the ultimate in on-cycle freighting. You can carry two grocery bags of snacks and a 30 pack of beer easily with a Wald basket.
Old baskets are a real bugaroo to clean-up however. Should you find yourself in that situation, silver paint is the best answer I have found thus far.

Wald Twin Rear Carriers (Baskets)
Good morning one and all. My name is Jason Kazee and I am the Outside Sales and Marketing Manager for Wald. A forum administrator alerted me to your discussion and asked if I could answer the question being debated.
Wald offers three models of twin carrier: the 520, 535, and 570. The basket sizes do vary by model type, but these sizes have remained consistent throughout each product's history. The only updates we have made include a new seat stay clamp design and adding eyelet mounts to the legs of our 520 and 535 models.
Photos and descriptions of the twin carriers are available on our website here:

Thanks for the discussion! Ride safe.

No mention of paperboys? Am I the only one who used these to carry papers back in the day?
The BIG ones ruled then and still do!

I had em on my single speed Schwinn when I delivered the Mansfield News Journal in the late 60's. Took a spill on a wet road one sunday the baskets held and the papers never moved I had them packed in there so tight.

I had a look at your website https://waldsports.com/index.cfm. It is very nice and greatly expanded my list of wants and "must have".
However, there are very few prices listed. Where can we get prices for these models and where can we buy them? If we find a model we like, we can hunt for it among the miriad of bicycle parts sellers, but we might not find what we are looking for.
Can we order direct from WALD? Where can we get prices?

'nother former paper carrier here I had the big yellow Schwinn Heavy Duty with the big basket in the front, biggest saddle baskets they made in the rear, and then put a paper carrier's shoulder bag on top of that! I would probably be scared to know what kind of weight I was rolling in those days...and on a coaster brake to boot
