The Zielemans have almost mythical status. Nice to see it built up - I wondered how that was coming along. Respect!

PS! How nice to be so many enthusiasts you can arrange picnics. That would be a very lonely event here in Oslo.

I´ll have to take your word for it, as I have no way of checking that. My colleague was in the/a RIH-shop in Amsterdam just resently, but I dont know if they could have helped out. Do they still make racing models? Their web-page indicates they only do commuter-rides.

Is there any other way to date a frame?

    Steinbra,

sr70guy asked about mine when he was in the RIH shop in amsterdam. The web site you visited was
probably RIH-Cove which are all city bikes. When I was there last year there were still more than a few
    road and track bikes.

The 'Cutter'? it's labled 'Barbecue Repellent', sort of an inside joke as the last time we got together I spilled a pint of BBQ sauce all over the passenger seat in my car and 2 Brooks Swallow saddles.

The project: Paint looks very good, pretty much like new, but at some spots tiny rust worms appeared. That will be restored now. I think it is an approx 1970 frame that got a new paint somewhere in the 80s. The parts that come on will be of the same era of the refinishing. Most of them will be donated by the for me way to tall black RIH of page 2. Roval wheels, Super Record, Weinmann Delta Pro brakes ...quite near an aero concept actually.

I have 4 Zielemans. This is the only one I got pictures from, but planning to put up pics of the other later.

Quite recent score is my Presto. I do have pictures of the frame:

Some of you might already know the pics - sorry, but I don't have any better photos yet.

First of all my lightest bike, used for what I call "training" , a 1985 Batavus Professional made of Reynolds 531 C with quite slim seatstays and a very gracile fork.
    Great all-round geometry.
Nice, I just picked up a Batavus Professional frame on ebay, still waiting for it to ship actually.
It's going to get built up with a mixed 8 and 9 speed Dura Ace group, Shimano 600 wheels and Cinelli bar and stem. Not period correct at all but it's what I have.

Any idea as to what year this is? All the pics I could find of Professionals except one had 531 stickers, but this one is made from columbus tubes.

Dutch bikes. Some mine, some not.

Not a classic, but it had a certain vintage.

    Same again.

Not vintage, but possibly a future classic.

The owner of this bike is both a classic, and he's been around long enough, he's vintage.

Finally put together this Batavus Professional. My educated guess is that it was built sometime between 1984 and the early '90's. Its made out of Columbus tubes while all the other Professionals i've seen on the internet have been made from 531. All Dura Ace components except the BB and hubs, which are Shimano 105 and 600, respectively. Not period correct at all but a really nice ride.

When I have a little more cash I'd like to get new tires, a silver Cinelli stem and a nicer seatpost than the scratched up kalloy.

anyone know how to contact Batavus or know how to read the serial #'s? I would like to find out which year this was built in, and what kind of Columbus tubing it was built with.

    Hello Pirate,

Columbus tubed Professionals are not new to me. Saw them with SLX, but possible also other tubing was used. SL on earlier ones? If that DA equipment is original, I think SLX for your bike is plausible. Getting touch with Batavus: Maybe try through their site? No idea whether they actually know.

Pirate: I also have a Batavus Professional with Columbus tubing. From what I can tell, the original components were Suntour GPX (with Stronglight cranks). Date stamps from the original components show manufacture in 1989.

Will post pics when I'm done rebuilding! (mainly 8-speed Dura Ace)

interesting head lug treatment, mine doesn't have the slotting nor the single hole drilled in it.
Does your Zieleman have any other embellishments like that on it?

    Marty,

Yes, 3 little holes on the underside of the toptube lugs. Somewhere I heard or read that should give you a clue of the age.

This is one thing among several more things that are different from my other Zielemans. I think these characteristics are typical for a frame this age. The other 3 frames are younger: My guess is mid 70s, early 80s, mid-late 80s

Enough of all these flash 80s gems. Here's a remnant of the 60s: a JOCO 5 speed. Not sure of the tubing, but with simplex dropouts. Found at the local dump. Resprayed by a previous owner, set up last year by yours truly as a stripped down tourer. Enjoyed a brief reprise, then dismantled again for storage in the garage.
    Merry Christmas - Jeff.

Oh wow, thanks! That's gotta be the best compliment I never thought I'd receive. I'm not sure if it's worthy...I mean, there are some awesome rides around here. I must admit she is a beauty, but I could be partial. I'm just glad the photos hide all the flaws. Then again if it were flawless I wouldn't want to use it as a daily rider!

I'm thinking of putting a dark brown brooks saddle and dark brown bar tape on it.

    Jeff,
Joco is on my very short list of frames/bikes I am looking for, yours may be only the 2nd or 3rd I've seen,
the other marque I'm looking for is Jabo (Jaspur Boma).
Any chance of getting additional pics of yours?

This one is borderline vintage. Seller said 1992, which is supported by a serial # ending in 92. The frame, labeled Gold Line Racing, appears to be basically new. No scratches, no chain whips, nothing. The components are mostly 74xx Dura-Ace, and run the gamut from mint to worn out. Included was a bike computer reading nearly 10000 km on the odometer.

The seller, which is a well known European bike author, claimed it was custom built of Reynolds 753 for a PDM team mechanic, but the frame has no tubing decals. So an interesting mind game to figure it all out, but likely never will.

It is the youngest bike in my growing stable. I wanted to see what deep-V rims, dual pivot brakes and brifters are all about, so when I saw this Gazelle for a reasonable price I jumped on it. Carbon next?

The ride is interesting. It is amazing how they are all so different. This one has the shortest most compact rear triangle of any of my bikes, but also the longest toptube, 60cm. The result is a fast and swift accelerator that climbs effortlessly, but with a soft and wobbly front end. I haven't done any high speed descents on it yet, but I'm not sure if I look forward to it. Can barely ride it hands free without crashing! The wheel base is still a short 100cm.

Some efforts at finding out more about this model have been mostly unsuccessful. Any input?
