The square taper that fits no square taper...

I've had this 73mm spindle in my parts boxes longer then I can remember. Beats me what it came off of, and even more so, what it fits onto.

Reverse side marked "5F."

The taper edges on each side are of a larger size then I have ever seen, and refuse to fit virtually any crankset that I have here. It slips in only 3mm or so into most Japanese cranks I have about, and refuses to fit into any Campagnolo NR crankarm.

Frankly, I wouldn't be too concerned about what it fit, but it so happens that I do have a Raleigh that could do with a square-taper 73mm spindle, and frankly, I haven't had much luck finding any normal spindles that would fit.

Take care,

-Kurt

I have a very similar spindle that came off of a Bridgestone Kabuki from 1975; it had a SR alloy crankset. I've kept them as a set since no other crankset I've encountered fit that spindle.

Have a photo of that crankset?

Maxy spindle tapers tend to be larger overall, not all nutted spindles are Maxy spindles.

There were also (very rare) 3 degree spindles and cranks. It isn't one of those.

I'll take a look in my old, old pile of rejected cranksets for any Suginos that might be of similar age, although I doubt if I'll find anything. Funny that it should have a unique spindle size all its own.

could it be a Japanese Raleigh, with a Sakae Ringyo CR crank? looks a lot like one i pulled off an old raleigh rust bucket last year. (maybe 1988? BB and spindle are at home) but here's a picture of the beautiful cranks:

the Raleigh ones are slightly different to this picture: 144mm BCD, 52/42 rings with bolt holes for a third inner ring, Raleigh stamping on left and right crank arms where this picture shows SR logo, raleigh dust caps.... nutted spindle that was fairly long, IIRC.

What you have is one of the obsolete Maxy style axles with a 3 degree taper, as opposed to 2 degrees. The most common crankset to use this taper was the SR Silver.

No, I doubt that; I had an avocet crank in the 80's, and it was interchangeable with Campy.

Thanks, T-Mar. Just curious, did the SR Silver have a fixed outer ring?

I so happened to test the spindle on an identical crankset to what you describe. No go.

Although difficult to see in the picture I posted, the washers on the crank have "SR Silver Chainwheel" written on them.

Because of this thread I rechecked my SR Silstar crank I took off an '80 Schwinn WS that I was going to use as a SS crank. It seems to fit the Shimano UN BB I bought, but I haven't tried tightening anything. Should I worry?

:lightbulb: Guess I should try the old BB spindle on another crank to see if it goes. I'll be back.

Report: mine fit in a 7402 DA crank, so by 1980 SR must have gone JIS.
