Rear Derailleur upgrade, Raleigh Grand Prix. Will this work?

Will this work with the current shifters/cassette/freewheel etc?

I presume I'll need a new shift cable, or no? I love the Grand Prix, but HATE the way it shifts. It's a 1974.

Unless anyone has an older suntour/shimano that they are looking to part with...

I suspect you will get more bang for your buck (and a bigger improvement in shifting) by replacing the freewheel with one with Hyperglide cogs. Assuming your derailleur is not excessively worn or damaged.

The newer "twist-tooth" design aids in shifting.

+1, you will get more improvement in your friction system by upgrading the freewheel. Just putting a SIS index derailleur on your bike won't give you indexed shifting if that's what you are trying to achieve. You would also need to upgrade the shifters to indexed.

No, I wasn't just looking for an index system. I am fine with Friction, but it's UBER slow, unresponsive, and finicky.....

Do I need anything else other than the freewheel? It'll work on my current hub? Whats the cost associated with it?

Just looking for some marginally better, more responsive positive shifting...

You'll need a shimano chain to go with it... having a chain that is designed for the HG freewheel will help immensely. Chains are something a lot of people cheep out on. I work in a shop of fussy customers. Any little tick or click they want checked out. Some guy brought his brand new touring bike back after a week because there was a tick. Shouldn't do that... we replaced the original sram cassette (cheeper to spec OEM) with a shimano to match the OEM shimano chain.. much quieter... Despite the ability of different parts to inter mingle, everone will have different experiences... when in doubt pair shimano chains with shimano freewheels for flawless shifting.
