Regina Freewheel Removal??
Hi. I am trying to swap the old, worn, Regina 5 speed freewheel on my 1972 Schwinn Paramount with a new IRD 5 speed freewheel. Can anyone tell me what tool is needed to remove the Regina? It looks a bit like a Suntour 2 notch but that tool does not fit and it is not the 20 splined remover (Park FR-4) tool either. Thanks in advance. Am I going to have to buy a special tool to remove this freewheel?

I seem to remember one that looked like Suntour, but had a slightly larger tab, and maybe at an angle?
I've taken them off using the Suntour tool, a jeebus bar, and PB Blaster combined with patience.
I don't think you'll have much luck finding the proper tool.
Good Luck, and don't hurry it.

BBM, I think any of those will work, but unless old age is no longer creeping, but sprinting, I think the dedicated Regina has slanted ears.
I've made it work on terribly stuck freewheels with the above, but once again, go slow.

Might help if he secured it with the QR skewer and used a bench vise?

OFG: You are correct. It is a bit wider and slightly a different shape than the Suntour 2 notch.
BBM: Thanks for the links. It looks to be the first one that you posted, I will give the LBs around here a try first. I moved recently and the old LBS I used, which had been around since the 1940's, was pretty good on the C&V stuff.
The only shop close to here that I have found (so far) is a Performance chain store. I went there today to get a 1 1/8 stem for my more modern ride and was stared at blankly when I asked for a " 1 1/8 stem, 90mm, 26.0 bar size w/ 10 degrees of rise", Then told "ummm...maybe we would like have to special order that or somthin'". Not exactly confidence inspiring......

After the notches peel away, disassemble the freewheel with a pin wrench and screw it off the wheel with a big pair of channel locks on the body. Throw all the remaining parts in the trash and use a Suntour freewheel. I don't think I've ever successfully removed a Regina!

Use the correct to and lock it on with the qr skewer and you won't have any problems at all. I used nothing but Regina D'Oro freewheels for thirty years until I learned that shifting is much smoother with a modern twist-tooth type.

Well I found a shop close by and had the freewheel removed without issue, so thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.
On a another note the IRD 5 speed freewheel shifts amazingly well compared to the old Regina. I also swapped out the Le Tour RD with a Shimano SIS silver, long cage I had. I think it is from the mid 1980's. Anyway they all play nice with the Suntour Barcons and the shifting is smooth and quiet!
