27" race tire and rusty nicks

First the rusty nicks, I have a metallic cream colored bike that seems to have been neglected but not abused. I've got it fixed up really good except I need to get a tool to repack the rear hub (seems okay anyway, the front was terrible and needed new cones.) The only thing I'm clueless on is the paint, it's in really good shape but has some rust where the frame joints are and also nicks from the chain that rusted. Any ideas on how to derust the bike without repainting? Overall the paint is great and not a standard color.

And also, I've got some 27"x1 1/8" tires on there now (couldn't wait to ride and originals were shot) but it is supposed to have 1" tires, in fact the rear wheel won't slide into the slots unless the tire is mostly deflated. Since 27" seems to be replaced by 700c is there anywhere to still get a nice 1" wide tire?

WalMart sells a rust remover in a white plastic bottle, cheap. Brush it on, and let it sit a bit, then rinse it off. It will dissolve the rust and leave either the paint below the rust, bare metal under the rust, or black color where the rust was.

If the paint remains, fine. Get some wax on it.
If the bare metal remains, get some touch-up paint or nail polish in a close color, and treat it. Then get some wax on it or even mask off the area and toss on a little clear coat.

If the black remains, that is neutralized oxidation. My next move would be a green scrubber pad and some WD-40 to see if it's going to get any better, like down to metal, or down to paint.

You may not get it completely off, but you can neutralize it and touch it up, worry about it next year.

Thanks, I was at the store and forgot to check out the rust stuff, I had seen it before but thought it was a gimmick. The paint is probably a hard color to match but bare metal with clear is better then rust.

As for the tire, the Avocet on Harris is gone But I found Panaracer Pasela, Continental Ultrasport (1 1/8"), or Cyclepro on ebay. None of them seem to have the thin raised center like the originals did. Any opinions on which tire to get? Should be better then the Bontrager Select 1.25" I've got now. I'm not riding the bike daily anymore (switched to a heavy hybrid bike) so durability is not an issue.

I found that 1 1/4" tires are a lot easier to find than 1 1/8. Is it the bike frame or the brakes that make it hard to mount the wheel? If it is the brakes, some kinds can be opened to allow the tire to fit through. Do you know what kind they are? Side pull or cantilever? The cantilever brakes have a "Y" shaped cable and if you squeeze the brakes by hand, you can temporarily pop the cable end out of the brake lever on one side to open them and fit the tire through.

EDIT never mind I see you want 1" tires.

Thanks for the replies been busy with bikes, heh. I'll get the Pasela's after I put some wear on the Bontragers. Was looking for a treadless tire but guess noone makes them anymore. I got a newer bike for racing now anyway.
It is the frame that gets in the way of putting the rear tire on inflated.

Dirtdrop: are those Koolstop continental pads? I was trying to find them online, my LBS isn't a kool stop dealer although they can get them through there supplier but we looked at the catalog and they didn't have that model listed. It doesn't stop very good and it's got new pads on it but they were el cheapo I think.

Do you have a closeup? Looks like no other Pasela tread I've seen.

They're Koolstop type C replacement pads for Campagnolo. Harris Cyclery has them and I see them on eBay all the time. I have some Continentals, but they're too ugly for my "show bike".

I'll take a picture. They may be old. I got them cheap on eBay a couple of years ago.

Here's that tread shot. The 27" wheels were a bad fit on the Gitane.
