Shipping a bike overseas....crazy money. How do you do it?

I had inquiry from a guy in Australia . He asked 'how much' to ship a complete bike to him. After doing a little research I'm stunned.....

UPS: ~$715 for an 54"L 30"H 10"W package. UPS uses 'dimensional weight' versus actual weight for internationl....
USPS: ~$400 but it needs to be in a box less than 108inches in length + girth
FedEx: ~$442 108" max length with a max length plus girth of 130"

I think I have seen DHL is a bit more reasonable. But with the fuel prices going nuts, I doubt any of them are cheap.

The 108 inch limit is on the Global express Guaranteed, but 78" on Priority Mail® International. I've shipped to two countries visa USPS Priority Mail Int'l that had the 78" limit. I was turned away a couple times because they said it was over the size limit, but eventually one of the USPS employees "let" it go. I would try going to different post offices till you find the "one."

I can easily fit a 60cm C-t-C frame set with all the components, except for the wheels in a box smaller than 103". You would just have to ship the wheel set separate.

FYI. I have to remove the fork from the frame and then I place it "inside" the frame. Good luck.

There is no problem to fit a complete bike into a 108" postal measurement box. Check out this site:

https://fotoalbum.alice.it/maasland/imballobici/

The description is in Italian but the images should be self-explanatory. I have shipped countless bikes overseas like this, including 62 cm frames, and never had any difficulties. For Australia, you are better contacting a 'normal' freight company and not a courier company. BAX is cheaper than any of the courier companies.

That must be some special bike yer shipping him. Be sure to specifically says "no refund on shipping&handling" in case he's not happy with it.

Best of Luck.
