Super Sport Updated!

I made a couple of changes to the '71 Super Sport. I was still feeling wrist pain, so I needed more extension on the handlebars. Then the Le Tour RD blew up on me, so I had to hunt around the garage for a replacement. I went with the long cage Suntour that had served so well on the red Trek 830; it seemed appropriate somehow. So here's a before:

And an after:

The requisite drivetrain photo:

And a little high flange action for you:

And a detail of the brake and shift levers:

It looks great, especially with those Collegiate/Suburban bars, Suntour shifters and new RD. Are they BMX or MTB brake levers?

Recently I used a similar set of bars on my 2003 C-Dale comfort bike (I hated the MTB type (nearly) straight bar). And at the same time I tossed the fat gel saddle and added a spare Brooks B-15 to see how it felt. With C-Dales smooth, fillet brazed look alike, tube joints, it sort of gives the same appearance of your SS.

Very nice looking bike. It shows that old Chicago made Schwinns never fade away. I have a yellow Super Sport in my shed that needs some fixing up. I used to have an Opaque Blue one when I was young, so for sentimental reasons I just can't give this one up.

Looks good. The saddle seems awfully nose-high in the "after" pic. (Ouch!)

They're MTB levers, from this:

The frame broke at the head tube, and I got all the parts back after my LBS got the frame replaced with a new Trek 820 under warranty. I've been re-using the parts as needed. I like the idea of some of that old bike "living on" with other bikes, like an organ donor.
