1985 Fuji Espree

https://orlando.craigslist.org/bik/794824820.html

I'm looking for a commuter bike, but don't want to overpay. Could anyone tell me a fair price for this bike and if it would suit my needs of a about a 3 mile commute to school and an occasional weekend ride. I'm on a budget, so I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive, reliable road bike. Thanks.

Fujis are good bikes; even their lower-tier models are well designed and made. That bike there will be more than adequate for what you list, and odds are that you'll ride even more because it's so much fun. Having said that, though, doesn't mean you should overpay. The asking price sounds a bit steep to me. I forget where the Espree falls in the Fuji hierarchy, but I don't think it's top of the line. You could definitely negotiate on this.

I had an Espree for a while. Sold it finally, last year. It is one of the few bikes I really regret selling. It was light and lively.

That's odd. Did they still have downtube shifters in '85? The pic in the ad isn't that good.

I had an 83 Fuji Espree for a while that I gave to my nephew. It was a solid bike that weighed in the 26lb range when stock minus the extra mess tacked on. You would see them equiped with two levels of Suntour usually, and models varied with the type of Valite tubing, from triple to regular 414 butted (I believe the lower of the Espree came with a mix of Dia-Compe, Sugino, Suntour AR, Nitto, Ukai). It was a lower midrange level Fuji and not exactly a lightweight of the time. Most had the stem mounted shifters complete with lovely pie plate in 12 speed guise. Regardless, it was a very comfortable ride if a bit dead feeling but fine for a commuter for sure. My nephew still rides it daily and has taken pride in learning how to work on it himself. $200 seems high for sure, at least in my view, although vintage road bikes are really getting up there these days. I picked mine up for $50 from CL to make into a FG/SS to cruise around the beach. My nephew saw it and fell in love. The beast made a fine B-Day present.
