What tubular do you ride?

I am looking for some gumwall tubulars that offer decent puncture resistance and good ride quality. Any suggestions?

What i have on 2 of my main road bikes are
Continental Spprinters .
not to cheap and not too expensive . they roll like Hell .
Mid class tubulars
https://www.conti-tyres.co.uk/conticy...sprinter.shtml

i would say these are by far the best bang for the cash . that i know of anyway .
Cheers

I'm a cheapskate. I have had decent luck with Vittoria Rallys - the ones with Kevlar.

I just picked up a half dozen Gommitalia Champion Tires for $16.99/each at Texas Cyclesport. They run sales from time to time. These are fine for 'everyday' tires.

For my good wheels, I run Veloflex or my last set of NOS Vittoria CX's. Those are what tubulars should/can be, but at $80/pc, I don't ride them everyday, but when I do ride them, WOW!

I run Bontrager race light 700x25s, but they look/feel like 700x27

Thats what I have now, but the front is black wall and the rear is gum. I think the "new" Colnago deserves better.

Right now I'm using Vittoria Rallye with Kevlar, Continental Giro, and Yellow Jersey Servizio Corse. I like the Vittorias best of these three. The Conti prices seem to be going up, so I think the relative value is going down. The Servizios are the best bang for the buck. If you really want to treat your Colnago, look for anything Veloflex or NOS Italian Vittoria, but be prepared for $60 to $100 per tire.

I haven't ridden any such high-end tires for quite a while, so I can't really say how much better they are than the Rallye, which is my current fave.

I use the Vittoria Rallys as a spare only and I hate the way it feels. (Not much better riding than a cheap clincher)

I still have some NOS Vit CX and LOVE them. The closest thing to these is the Veloflex Criteriums in 700X23, which can be had in gum sidewall. Colored or black sidewall look funky in a vintage bike. The last time I purchased a pair they were $50/each including shipping from Danny at CritsUSA@aol.com.

PS Riding clinchers on a vintage bike is like sporting "splash" bar tape on your Cinelli 66 bars!

I have the Conti Giro's and they are fine for daily riding but don't have the puncture resistance of higher dollar tires. The Gatorskin Sprinters at 45-50 bucks will be my next tire.

I really liked the Continental Sprinters that came on my bike. They are what I would have kept with had I not switched to clinchers. But, for ~$50/tire they are expensive!

Well, sort of.

Yes they have an inne tube, but it is sewn into the tire, and you have to glue the tire onto the rim, since there is no bead on the tire or hook/bead on the rim.

No, although it sounds as if they should be! Tyres with separate inner tubes where the tyre is held inside the rim by a bead are called "clinchers".

Tubulars are lightweight tyres with a very light inner tube that is sewn inside a thin cotton or silk fabric rubberised outer casing. These are glued onto a very shallow concave specific rim bed. They are also known as "sew-ups", "sprints", "singles" and "tubs" - depending on where you live!

A puncture is an absolute nightmare as you have to unglue the tyre, remove a base tape from the tyre, unpick the stitching, expose the tube, fix a patch, put the tube back in, sew it up again without piercing the tube with the needle, glue the base tape back on and then glue the tyre back on the rim and let it set. Takes ages and doesn't always work. Better to carry a complete spare "tub" strapped under the saddle and some temporary adhesive tape and swap the entire tyre over - fix the thing at home over a couple of days.

Despite all this, they are absolutely phenomenal to ride!

Although I've only had them in blackwall and with a red stripe, I really like EVO-CXs. As a comparison, I bought a pair of Gommi Champions and think I rode them twice before removing and relegating them to duty as my spares.

Vitt CX real nice tire, Sprinter OK but a nice Clincher with a latex tube will ride better,,,,,,,,, , and cheap tires really miss the point of tubulars IMO.

I have sprinters on the Pogliaghi pista, for the simple reason that they are the longest lasting
tire at the local velodrome.
for road tires I have a mix of Conti sprinters, Monti tires (black with gumwall, currently aging),
Vittoria and 1 lone gommitalia espresso ( I'm looking for a match).
I've heard very good things about the Deda Olympico a gumwall tire on par with the sprinter
in price and a nice file tread.
