Vintage Specialized

For all you lovers of vintage MTB's here's my newest find. From what I can see of the Serial Number, it looks like a 1986 Rockhopper. It comes with an XT group mixed with some Specialized parts. The bike is original down to the tires and tubes. The last 86 Rockhopper I bought was a total dog. I almost gave up on ebay becuase of it. This bike restored my faith in ebay.

Thanks, 3 months ago that was my next door neighbors house. He had constant flooding from the creek 20 ft away. So, FEMA bought it and the city burned it down in a controlled fire exercise. Now it's a nice fire trail.

86 Hoppers should be Red or Blue? My 86 is Red.
87 had a Yellow version, but it should have U brakes in back.
Maybe they started painting 86 frames in 87 colors?

You should be able to easily? see the Shimano date code on the inside of the FDER, to the lower right of the model #'s.

I love the look of the shifters!

I was thinking the same thing myself. I can't quite make out the SN on the BB. Specialized usually had the date year as part of the number. Didn't Shimano start using the new indexed XT group in 1987? This is the older friction group. The bike is definitely original, so it must be in that 86/87 era. I've seen 88 Rockhoppers with the new style frame and a U-brake. My original 89 Rockhopper Comp is the newer 2 tone paint with a Deore II 7 sp group. The 88's I've seen are identical to mine except for the U-brake.

My friend has an 87 (bought new) that is blue and has U brakes.

My "secondary?" serial#/code is GC286. Maybe Feb 86?
Primary SN is 605xxxx.
Various Shimano date codes (ones I've actually checked) vary from Nov 85 to Jan 86.

My most recent finds from the world of Specialized
The first on is a 1983 Stumpjumper all stock except tires and seat
The other Stumpjumper is a 1990 or 91 model all stock except for the seat.

I lucked out on both of these becasue the price was right and they both fit me.

There a lot more desirable and sexy MTB's out there than Specialized. But for me, they hold a special place. My first MTB was a 1989 Rockphopper Comp that's still sitting in the garage. I was hoping to get a few more of them. Missed out on a real nice 1988 Comp frameset earlier this year.

There's a 1983 Specialized Expedition available on craigslist with a non-local shipping option:
