3Rensho Questions

So I just bought a San Rensho off Craigslist and I'm trying to find out more about it (in terms of both value and info). Here's the skinny: (original) candy apple red with a chrome fork, amazing lugs everywhere, little elephant sticker, decals that read "cyclone" and "super record export," Shimano dropouts, Campagnolo headset, Royal Grand Compe brakes, and Suntour Superbe Pro crank, chainrings, derailer, hubs. Anyone?

It looks just like the SR model. But what year(s) were these made?

You can't embed an image that resides on your desktop. You'll either need to attach it to your post or upload it to an image hosting site (e.g., photobucket) and then embed the link to where it resides on that site.

ca 1983. Based on serial, the Shimano ends, lack of an aero fork and the fact it is a chrome fork. Few other detail also. These bikes were for the most part not sold complete, but as a frameset which was equipped by the customer. Nice bike.

I would have never thought of that, but it makes sense. In another discussion of Renshos however, I've heard that the serial numbers contain no chronological code. Anybody know? Have 3Ren serial numbers been archived anywhere?

Sorry, you are misinterpreting the number provided.

A471 is the serial, 525 is the frame size. I owned A658-560, a 56cm early SRA and currently own A571-525, another 52.5cm early SRA. The early Super Record Aero used Campy ends, had an aero fork and aero seat stays, among other changes from the Super Record.

My assessment is based on a note to me from Andrew Muzi, US importer of 3Rensho. He indicated frames serial numbered A500-A800 were late 1984. Hence the ca 1983 dating I shared. It could conceivably be early 1984. He also pointed out to me the differences between the earlier and later frames.

I know the stem, handlebars and shifters are way off. But would period correct components include anything (good) from c. 1983? Or are there specific components that went on these bikes?

As mentioned in an earlier post, these were sold as framesets and equipped to the buyer's spec. The 56cm I had was equipped with C-Record. I see a lot of these with DA or Suntour Superbe. Anything top end would be appropriate.

At least put some drops on it...Beautiful bike, though, no matter what you decide to do with it.

3Rensho's are pretty much collector's items these days; Konno stopped building after being paralyzed in an accident. You did well...do the bike a service and find some period-correct Suntour Superbe Pro.
