I have heard of Excelsior. I do not believe that the first bike is from 1919. My guess is from the 50's. The Hedstrom kids bike is from the 60's. Hedstrom was a firm from Pennsylvania that made very cheap steel kids bikes and trikes. I remember this wonderful pain in the butt to work on cranksystem of this Hedstrom. You really do not want to work on it !
Let's see what others have to say about the Excelsior.

The skip tooth drive train and dropouts suggest that the Schwinn is pre-WWII. That's the best I can do on that. Someone may know more.

The Excelsior is gorgeous, and in super condition! Are those 28" wheels? Post to the Cabe and Wheelmen forums for better info.

I would be willing to sell it for the right price. What did you have in mind?

While on the topic of Hedstrom - I just acquired a Hedstrom adult trike - I believe Explorer is the model - its got a 3 speed hub - looks like a Sturmey Archer (or however that is spelled) It looks like its from the 80's. I can't find any info on the net about adult trikes and this brand. Could it be the same as the previous poster?

Excelsior was for many years Schwinn's motorcycle division, competing with HD & Indian. Production of the motorcycles was shut down near the start of the depression, about 1930. I was not aware that they continued the name on bicycles.

I had not heard of the Hedstrom either but one of the original founders of Indian was Oscar Hedstrom as I recall. I believe he was also an early bicycle racer.
