thumb shifter options for older bike

I know about the Kelly take-offs and the Paul thumbies, but is there an inexpensive option to get the shifting on to the bars instead of the downtube?

I thought maybe old friction thumb shifters from a MTB but the diameter is different.

Anybody doing this?

Suntour command shifters. I just picked up a set for $5 at the co-op. Put them in friction and I like them at least as much as any low end brifter.

These or similar have worked fine for my utility bike......no front derailer, just an 8 sp back. The are not indexed but have little ratchets that seem to help

ive converted a few bikes with drop bars to flat or touring bars and have used cheap low end friction shifters with no problem at all. i just did this with a single speed murry monteray cruiser and converted it to a 6speed with rear deraillur. im using a suntour in friction mode. who knows, if i ever convert to a narrow chain and put a double chainring in front, the shifters might just work with the 6speed suntour freewheel.
