classic cruisers - seatpost and binder ??
I have an old Elgin that I'm fixing up for my wife to tool around on but have run into a couple of snags.
1. I need a seat post (7/8") but I was wondering if there are any modern type posts that can clamp to
a new style/rails Brooks saddle I picked up. The bike did not come with a seat post, and I have since discovered that the original post has actually been broken off in the seat tube. I was thinking that I might tack a solid rod of the same diameter as the inside of the seat post that is in there (It isn't coming out) and then slide a post over that (cut to size) to install the seat onto. Any ideas here ?
2. It has a "skip-tooth" styled chain that was with it, but terribly rusted and I don't think that I can salvage it. Anybody know if they are still sold ? If for some reason I can salvage it, (it's been soaking in a coffee can full of diesel for a few days now) do ou think that I would be able to find a master link for it ? If so, where do you think I could find one?
Other than that, the bearings, cranks etc have cleaned up extremely well.....they made them more durable in the old days, that's for sure. The frame has the most perfectly rusted/oxidized/faded patina on it. I just cleaned the snot of it and put things back together. I had to paint the rims (dark red) and replace a few spokes and added some fat white wall tires, so it kinda looks like a "rat-styled" hot rod bike.
Just need to solve the seat post & saddle.
Any and all recommendations appreciated

Chain-- try
www.memorylane-classics.com
They usually have skip tooth chains in stock. Give them a call and see what they have-- the staff are very helpful there.
