Holy cats! You found Pee Wee Herman's first bike! I'll bet there's a collector out there - or here - who'll pay some good coins for that old beastie. Neat!

It's not mine... she rolled in to my shop as she needed her bottom bracket serviced.
I will also be assisting with the restoration. Does anyone know when this bike was made? The rear hub is a New Departure type D that has been laced to a new wheel that I think is original equipment. The skip tooth chain ring and cog make me think she's pretty old, that little button on the tank is for an electric horn, and the springer assembly for the bike was removed so it could have it's upper mount repaired. |
I have an old 1936 Hawthorne. Also has a skip tooth ring on it, same seat, same fenders, and same/similar style luggage rack, ill have to dig up a pic. Ill take a guess and say its around the same age. I dont have a sweet tank though.

I am hoping that someone who knows more about these bikes can pin down a date and I would not be surprised if it was pre-war model... the fellow who owns it picked it up in Oregon and brought it north.

Im thinking 1950s sometime by the curving stays and downtube shape.

I concur with divineAndbright on the post war date. Skiptooth drivetrains were used into the fifties by some companies. Hawthorne was a Montgomery Wards department store brand and over the years they had bikes made under contract by several companies. The shape of the frame and fork crown look a lot like a '50s Roadmaster design to me.

What's the wheelbase on that thing? Looks like it's probably 50 inches axle-to-axle.
