Bottom Bracket Conversion for Old Schwinn

Ive acquired an '80 Schwinn Continental and I want to replace the one piece crank to a 3 piece. Are these Conversion Kits from American to Euro BB's a good route to go? Any Help would awesome , thanks

Harris cyclery sells them for about $25.00 I think. They are made by Tru-vativ. I used one on my continental and PastorBob has too. Like Sheldon Brown said " Be the first kid on your block to install Dura Ace on your Varsity" or at least thats the way I think the quote went. One thing to think about before you do the conversion is that unless is the main concern the old Ashtabula cranks were nearly bulletproof and you can still replace the sprockets

CTPetty,

Welcome to C&V. You need to consider the cost and decide if it is worth the effort and expense to you. The adapter is about $25, a new cartridge BB about $20, and the cost of the crankset, well that is the big variable. Easily you can be out $75 and way up there for this to work. If you enjoy this kind of fun, go for it! As you can see I did with my '62 Continental. Best of luck!
