Can I convert my 1980 Raleigh Super GP to an ATB?
Not like a really hardcore mountain bike or anything, but something with beefy tires that can be ridden on some trails, etc? What would I need to do? I guess the standard atb wheel is a 26" (correct me if I'm wrong)? So if I put 26" wheels on it what size tire could I fit and what would I need to do with the brakes? Should I leave the 700c wheels on and if so what size tires would fit then?
This is the bike when I first bought it. Since then, I have removed the dork disk, put mustache bars on with new tape, and put a wright's leather saddle on it. It has a Sugino 3x5 drivetrain with bar end shifters.

This might help a bit. I think the Univega looks amazing.

If it has 700c wheels now, going to MTB sized is a huge jump: 622mm to 559mm, so you'd need an additional 32mm of brake reach! What might work better is to convert to 650B/584mm, and 650B tires come in a variety of widths, all the way to 42mm with knobbies.

thanks.
I really like that univega. Very similar to what I'd like to do. Will my centerpull weinmans work or will I need to get something with a longer reach?
