shimnao 600 on Raleigh supercourse?
this should work right? i was looking around doing hw to see if this is a worthy upgrade. couldnt find any info so i decided to try it. i picked up a shimano 600 front and rear derailleur and crankset for $40 total, used but very good condition. already got the BB and crankset installed , it was a 68X113 24TPI. had to get shims for the front derailleur. (28.6 mm). anyways, i just want to know if anyone has used this combo on this bike before and with what results. Thanks

Sounds like it should work fine. I like the 600 stuff, never had a problem .

Does the Shimano 600 group from the late 80's have the indexed-to-friction shifting option for the RD?
|
Funny, I was just down in the basement putting a 600 on my supercourse. I don't have it up and running but I'll let you know when I do.

I put a NOS early 600 group on this 1971 Super Course when I did a repaint. Much improved, especially the hubset. Here's the before & after.

how would i find out whether my RD has index to friction option?
|
oh also, has anyone had success with this frame swapping to 700 wheels and newer brakes? any issues with reach for the brakes? thanks.

You'd need a hanger off of a bike that used a standard threading. Most stamped dropout early 80's bikes had them, so thankfully they're somewhat easy to find. I used one to put a golden arrow rear derailleur on my 83 Le Tour. Worked perfectly. The 600 should thread right into it without any back nut.
The reach on both of my Super Course bikes are pretty long, at least in the rear. That is with 27 inch rims too. Smaller rims might be too much of a reach for anything other than the stock centerpulls. There are new options though Im not sure on the fitment for the particular purpose. Check out velo-orange, I know I've seen them there. I have been tempted to do this same thing to my black one, but it has a Huret Jubile on the rear. It's hard to bring myself to remove it, hehe.,,,,BD |
yea well. i found mine at my neighboors house, rusting and sitting for the better of 10+ years. I asked if i could bring it back to life, and i'm doin that just so it can maybe have a little more life, you know? ill def try that out though, thanks for the input.

I'm at work so I can't go check on the original brake mfg (Weinimen?) on the Super Course I parted out. They were long reach & I had no issues putting them on a bike with 700's
|
Yea the Weinman's would work, however I am looking to kinda of freshen up the bike all over performance wise. I have seen the brakes on velo orange, some tektro long reach brakes.....anybody tried them? I also did see the sheldon brown lowering bracket. Last resort I think I would do that. I did just pick up some older shimano 105 brake/shifters for cheap and I'm really happy about that.

My 600 came with a hanger and so did the derailler that I took off the supercourse. Here's a picture of the 600 on the bike I got it from. I don't have a picture of it on the SC but it looks about the same.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...n/IMG_1874.jpg I hated to part out the Sprite but it was bent in a bad way and had a lot of parts that I was kind of hungry for. Actually, I was kind of glad to see the bent frame cause it had a lot of parts that I was hungry for and I wasn't really hungry for another step through basement stuffer. |
Hmm. I don't think I actually answered your question, did I. You just need a Japanese hanger.
|
a japanese hanger? could i just drill and tap it so it would fit? or am i just better off goin to a bike shop or finding one off of a junker?
|
How did you guys get a Shimano 24tpi BB into a Super Course of this vintage?
I'm building up a '72 Super Course right now and I was wondering how I could get a cartridge BB on it. Did you guys get the threads retapped or something? |
if your eyelet for baskets/rack is on the back of the rear dropout, i think its the 26tpi all around the bike. check the sheldon brown site...i learned a lot from that site in the two weeks ive been restoring/upgrading my raleigh supercourse, and am still learning a lot more. i used a 68x113 BB 24tpi. a basic shimano one was like 25 at the lbs.
|
You could just drill out that hanger. It will just make french derailler hangers a little rarer.
|
The stop would be wrong though, correct? The derailleur would swing too far forward, since Huret Stops are some degrees forward of Japanese models if experience holds?
The Supercourse I found recently already had a cotterless conversion, and I'm glad to have it. Not sure which BB it has. I haven't had a chance to look too closely at it.,,,,BD |
just need an adapter claw. You can buy them anywhere for $3.95. It will allow you to mount just about any derailer except for the oddball early Huret and Simplex.

So those French claws are probably worth hanging onto?
|
Nice deal on the 600 group by the way!!
