My 80's Bottecchia
Bike arrived earlier this week and I started work on it today. Disassembled, cleaned the frame and fork. Some parts soaking in Evaporust.
Plans? To get it in riding condition. I'm no Italian owner, this is my first. So parts will be a mix of Japanese and Italian. This is a free bike given by a friend so I'm not spending much on it other than the shipping charges and consumables that I don't have in stock.
What the bike came with:
Campy bb, dropouts
Gipiemme drivetrain and headset
3TTT stem and bar
Shimano 105 calipers
Modolo carbon fiber shifters
Universal brand levers
mix of Mavic and Fiamme wheels with SunShine Gyromaster hubs
On to the pics:
the night it arrived

parts removed
IMG_9723 by 2cam16, on Flickr
after a wash and removing some surface rust on the fork

Buona Sera Don Roberto,
thanks very much for commencing this textillium.
enjoyed Teddy's earlier one.
try as i might cannot imagine how your letter carrier was able to fit the frame through the letter slot without incurring damage.
perhaps there be a future for them in stage magic.
forgot to ask earlier -
how was your Oxalis crop this past winter?
mine on the other side of SFB way bumper.
all best wishes with the new project.

Bottechia
I picked up a late 60s Bottechia last week ...and have to admit I didn't know much about them ... however they are beautiful bikes and look forward to seeing more of your project

Yes Teddy has arrived and will be here on a permanent basis.
After last season's Oxalis, I gave up this year and just let it go because it's a never ending problem. Luckily this season wasn't too bad. Did not see much yellow "fields" in my backyard.

Congratulations on your new acquisition, I love this brand and have been looking for one for quite a while....with friends like that who needs friends!
BTW does "your" friend need any new ones?
Best, Ben

The OP's frameset has Portacatena dropouts, indicating 1978 to circa 1983. The black livery was used on the frames issued to the pro teams from 1978-1983, before switching to red in 1984. This matches well with the Portacatena era. However, the white seat and head tubes were not added to the pro team bicycles until 1981, so the frame should be 1981-1983. Consequently, it could be Hoonved-Bottechia (1981-1982) or Malor-Bottechia (1983) livery. Tubeset should be Columbus SL.

@2cam16, in case I neglected writing this:
Congrats on your new ride. Bottecchias are great bikes. B&W are hard to find.
Ride safely!

Qops! The pro team using this frameset in 1983 was Malvor-Bottecchia. I inadvertently dropped the 'v'. I also just noticed that it has the front derailleur hanger, which should eliminate a 1981 model.

Yes!, Bottecchias are fantastic, underrated bikes!
I think my 89 Professional SL Chorus.........
......rides just as good as my Pinarello Montello. Certainly not as fancy or built with exotic derails, but it has what counts on the road!

Polished and buffed the chrome. Tried to clean what I could in the small nooks and crannies and also what stubborn rust there was. Then polished and waxed the frame. Unfortunately the clamped-on bottle cage one of the previous owners put on the seat tube messed up the decal so there isn't much I can do to fix it. Replacement decals for the fork are on order. I left parts of the old ones on just for positioning reference. I'm loving the details on this bike. I've never owned one so "intricate".

Oh, yeah, it's nice. you did a great clean-up job. Replacing the bottle cage may cover-up the damaged decal but this is not a very good idea - hate those clamped-on bottle cages.
Occasionally, if I have a bike with a damaged decal, I get appropriate small bottles of model (aeroplane) paint, and a small brush and touch-up the damaged decal. It's easy for little touch-ups but your damage seems a little big for this method of repair. I'd probably have a go with and airbrush and masking tape but not everyone has an airbrush. You may have to put up with the damage if cut and polish won't restore the two areas a little better.
It's a great bike and I bet you're really happy to have it but unfortunately little flaws are part of our life.

Beautiful! Drool!
Nearly every bike I have has damaged decals, except the Pinarello that doesn't have any left!

bike is black and white so go with B&W! class all the way. then, if you feel like it- give it a dash of color somewhere. green or red to match the decal perhaps.
I briefly had a bottecchia until i had to admit it was just a little to big- but it sure was beautiful!

Worked on it a bit this morning. Tried out the Suntour VX rd I had planned to use on it. Cassette is now an 11-28 7 speed and it handles it well. Hopefully that translates the same on the road.
Slapped on a Jim Blackburn cage but also still contemplating on switching it with an Elite Ciussi that I have. Weight wise, the JB wins but looks and made in Italy would go to the Elite. We'll see.
