    Huret RD - RubaDubDub

I just finished putting together a 75 Gitane 10-sp for a friend. When I have it in 1st gear, the pulley cage rubs against the cassette - in other words, it's too close to the cassette because the wound spring doesn't pull it away enough to give clearance. How can I fix this?

BTW, anyone else having problems logging in on this forum? It constantly asks for my password - been that way for about a month now.

    Ken,

Is your chain too long? A shorter chain has usually solved any of my RD clearance challenges. It should pull the cage far enough away from the freewheel in order to give you the needed space. Try just folding in a few links to see if this will pull the RD far enough away.

I've not had any problems with the forum. Best of luck

If shortening the chain isn't the solution, can you wrap the derailleur cage around one more turn to increase spring tension? Forgive me if that's a poor suggestion, it's been a while since I've dealt with a Huret.

Which model of RD? I was looking at Huret info here a while back and I found a lot of talk about the weakening of the springs on the Svelto model.

Shorten the chain so the upper pulley swings rearwards of the pivot point.

    Huret Svelte

Oh noooo, yes it's the Huret Svelte...weird looking model. I wouldn't mind getting a replacement while still keeping with the vintage. Huret would be nice just to keep it all the same. Any thoughts on where?

Also, that idea on spinning the cage around once to tighten the spring - interesting. I'll pull off the chain tonight and give it a try - what do I have to lose. Otherwise I'll throw on a different RD for now.

Of course this had to happen two days before our bike/camping trip - yikes!

Well, I just tried it on an old Eco I had in my parts bin and it would only go round about 3/4 more, so I'm thinking it probably won't work for the Svelto either.

I think if you do a search on for Huret Svelto on this forum, that may be where I read about it. I can't remember who it was but they said that they had retensioned the spring. Just a thought. You might be able to find a replacement on Ebay as well. I did some google searches for Huret parts and came up with quite a few options. Unfortunatly I was looking for Allvit, so I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the Svelto parts.

    It's a thought anyway.

    Another Derailleur

I just fixed it by putting on another derailleur. I kept the Huret Svelte for rainy day and will try finding a working spring. It's definitely the spring that is causing the problem. I ended up throwing on a 70s Simplex RD (black plastic with red touches)...just got back from a test ride and works fine.

    buona sera...
    ken
