Sorry to revive an old thread, but it's just the sort of information I'm looking for. My most recent addition came with a 45T single front chainring and a 14-32 5spd Suntour freewheel. The NR rear mech seems to work OK with this set-up, if a little unhappy with the 32. I am thinking of trying one of the IRD freewheels and wonder if their 13-32 is just pushing things too far, or should I play safe with the 13-28? This is a bike with fairly long chainstays and horizontal rear dropout.

there is a lot of misinformation about the capacities ot the obsolete campagnolo nouvo record & super record rear derailleurs, they both have same geomertry. sutherlands & disreali gears are both in error. both sloane & delong stated in their books that the capacity is 30 teeth, at least in the long campy horizontal dropouts. i have done it,so it works. one of my friends who had a nottingham built raleigh international asked what the ultimate 12-speed gearing saving as much of the original components as possible. when we did this suntour ultra 6s were common. a 13 -14-17-21-26-30 cluster with chainrings that are five teeth apart, 38-43 to 47-52. if you have chainrings of 42-52 you could use a 13-15-17-19-21-24-28. harris cyclery lists this on their website as a stock combo. i would change the13 for a 14. campy revised the pivot point of their rear derailleurs to work with 10 tooth difference, it is still happier with a half step. the bike i worked on with the 42-52 chainrings george traded jim the used super record for a brand new 600 ultegra which shifted better than the campy. my friend who had the internatonal, i never rode a bike with a nouvo record that shifted as well as barrys did.

The following isn't perfectly to scale, but it gets the point across. If anyone wishes to contest the line drawing's validity, I'll gladly pull the cages off a Nuovo and Super later today; for comparison. Nuovo is in yellow, Super in red:

I see your picture very clearly. I'm also impressed. How did you make it?

Wow, that's a great drawing, Kurt! Almost as nice as my recent De Rosa drawing.

I've always run 50/42. 28 never a problem, even with 52. But yeah, you don't just throw one on, gotta perfect chain length.
