Anyone know what happened to Hilary Stone?

Tuesday night was always my favorite to cruise the Vintage Parts section of ebay. Hilary would list his stuff to end on Sunday. I haven't seen anything from him in the last few weeks and about 3(?) weeks ago it looked like he changed his user name. Granted the only things I bought from him were some brake cable clips and a freewheel, but he always listed some great stuff. I hope he is only in vacation.

This is all tied into the new Ebay regulations that require sellers to maintain a reasonably high buyer's satisfaction rating in the various feedback categories. In Hilary's case, his feedback rating in the shipping time is too low for ebay, so they have temporarily suspended him. The idea of suspending people who do not maintain high customer satisfaction ratings is commendable but has been implemented without sufficient thought in the case of shipping times internationally. Most buyers bid on items without ever thinking about where the item might come from, and then are miffed when a shipment from Europe takes weeks to arrive. I know of two well-known and respected European sellers who have been temporarily suspended already because they have low scores in the shipment timing, this even though both virtually always ship items within two days of receipt of payment. By all rights, no buyer should be able to complain about such delays, but people still continue to give these international shippers ratings of 2 and 3 which quickly lowers the seller's score in this one satisfaction rating. Unfair! If you can't accept to wait extra time for international delivery, you shouldn't even be considering buying internationally, or, if you do, you should judge your feedback score on how long it takes for the seller to ship the item, not how long it takes for the item to arrive. END OF RANT!

I got my awesome chrome plated Record triple from him. I had no complaints about the shipping or anything else.

that eBay policy is pretty messed up, and not surprising that when they tinker with something they get wrong and unexpected consequences...luckily I think Hilary can withstand the bumps that they throw in his path: he seems to have a very healthy eBay business going with many satisfied customers (along with a few spoiled children who want instant gratification).

I was bidding on one of his frames when the curtain came down on him. I subsequently won the frame when it was relisted. I won the frame on Sunday night, paid Monday, and on Wednesday, FedEX tried to deliver it (signed the hang tag and it was left the following day). How 'bout them apples.

FedEx is great, no doubt. But the mail is so inconsistent. Typically it is 4 weeks from France or Italy but today I just got some decals from Giorgio, it only took 1 week. I can't figure it out other than to be pleasantly surprised when something arrives under a month.

I do both buying and selling to Europe and its a crap shot. Each country has very specific rules and regulations.

As an example, 10 days ago I sent out 2 frames, one to California and one to Japan. The Japanese frame got there a few days ago but I'm still waiting for Parcel Post delivery of the California frame.

From a cost perspective it varies as well. I sent a wheelset to Japan for ~$85 shipping. a lighter weight set over $250 to Easter Europe.

The counter lady at the post office said there are 8 U.S. shipping friendly countries, odds are, if your European product isnt coming from one of those 8 it may take awhile.

He's got some used GB rando bars for $25. If you all didn't know, Schwinn Continentals came with GB rando bars as standard equipment. I've purchased Schwinn Continentals at garage sales for $10 just to get the bars, brakes and a few other items.

BTW, in my experience, the quickest overseas shipping is from Japan. I purchased some Hozan tools from a vendor in Japan, and received them in 3 days! (Osaka to New York City)

I used to get all my stuff shipped UPS and 3 days was the norm. It now seems that 7 days is the min.. USPS used to take about 4 to 5 days most of the time. It now seems to be at least 7 days and most of the time it is 10 days. If they all keep eliminating jobs it will take a month to get something shipped here in the states. I guess this is progress.**********

He recently posted a few frames up for sale on the CR list:

https://search.bikelist.org/?SearchSt...MsgDate[d]

They never seem to be larger than 23". I suppose shipping costs may be prohibitive.

Today he listed a pretty PR frameset. https://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...astoni-P-R.jpg

And hopefully the listers won't get their knickers in a bunch over the C-Record stuff.
