I just bought a 92 marinoni with campagnolo athena gruppo. The bike camed with a wolber rim in the front laced to campy hub 36h and a fir rim in the back laced to campy hub 32h. I want to buy a new set of rims and keep the hubs but the problem is the difference in spokes number. I wonder if my hubs are matching... I know that athena front hubs were 36h like mine but can't find if the rear hub is supposed to be 32h.

I dont think your hubs are matched. In fact, the 36-hole front hub with the Wolber rim probably came off an 80's bike somewhere along the line. Been my experience, at least with early 90's bikes, is that 32-hole hubs were pretty much standard of the industry. Your rear hub with the FiR rim sounds about right for your bike.

Should be able to get you a 32-hole Athena/Chorus front hub from ebay for not too much, to more closely match your rear hub. What kind of rims do you want to use for your wheel build?

Front wheel would never have more spokes than the rear. I had a 1990 Bob Jackson that had 32 h Athena front and rear. I'm thinking that's what yours would have been originally also.

That's what I'll do. Or maybe I'll just go for a complete wheelset since I'll only be keeping my rear hub.
If I only get rims, I was looking for cxp33. I've also considered ambrosio, like maybe Excellence. I need something strong. It is my work bike for a while and you don't even want to know what I'm making to a Marinoni. So Strong, Light then Aero is what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

I built up a set of Ambrosio 'Excellence' rims in the hard to find red anodise and they're great. Have about 5000 miles on them built up to 8-speed Record hubs. I also considered the cxp-33, as well as FiR, but the Ambrosios got the nod and I'm glad I did.

I recently bought a used set of wheels from Ebay with the cxp33's and there is something rattling around inside one of them. I noticed that they have "wells" for the nipples pressed in that seems to preclude shaking anything out through one of the holes in the rim.

yeah, I think I,m going to go with something with eyelets. Open pros are to expensive for what I'll be doing, I just really like my shimano 600 with 80's mavics (with eyelets) that I have on my touring bike so that's why I was looking for Mavic at first. I might try the excellence or something a bit lower in the Ambrosio line. My friend as evolutions and he likes them. I like the box rim look of the Ambrosios.
