20.6 mm Stem? Where can I find one?

I recently got a "vintage" Murray monterey, and the stem is a little short - I have looked all over the web and cannot find a 20.6 mm stem anywhere.

Am I out of luck?

They are rarer than hens' teeth. 22.2mm stems are the most common, and 21mm stems are less so.

Your best bet is probably to buy a 22.2mm stem (if you need extra height, the Nitto Technomic would be a good choice), and use a lathe or a belt sander to take 0.8mm off the of the quill and stem radius.

21.xx (old schwinn/japanese size) can be had on ebay, 22.0 (french) are not uncommon, and you would not need to take quite so much material off as from a 22.2

Agreed, it would much safer to downsize a 21.15mm/0.833" stem. The other alternative is to get a flex hone or reamer from an automotive store and enlarge the inner diameter of the steering column.

A safer approach would be to downsize the stem by half the required amount and achieve the rest by enlarging the inner diameter of the steering column.

Safest of all would be to see if you can tolerate the saddle being pushed back far enough on the rails to achieve the desired reach.
