Colnago Help
A friend recently gifted to me this Colnago. It has seen it's share of use in it's day, and as such has a hodge-podge of parts attached to it. Some old Campagnolo, some not-as-old Dura Ace, Shimano 600, Cinelli, etc.
The frame is rusting in places and the chrome is quite blemished as well. Other than that the bike rides very well and could use some cleaning up.
Can anyone offer advice with regards to the frame and the more battered components? I'd like to get this in better shape and preserve it as best I can. Any and all observations welcome, colnago-lovers.

Complete tear-down and overhaul is in order here. Then you can better assess what it needs.

I was wondering about that 1972 sticker. It seemed a bit too easy to ID the bike from that...
If anyone has done a restore job on a similar bike, I'd like to know what you did. I gather that chrome is very expensive to repair/redo and I really like the original paint, so I'm more interested in cleaning and preventing any further damage. For instance, how do i remove the rust without damaging the paint?
I suppose I'll get some cleaning solutions and brushes for now...

The paint is pretty far gone, I'd get it powder coated and buy some repo decals.
Also, there should be a number on the back of those cranks designating the length (like 175 or 180)... out of curiosity,, what is it?

1979-1980 Super, not a Mexico at all.
replica decals available for that model from cyclomondo (ebay).
you could search C&V for oxalic acid wash to save as much rust as possible at once without stripping too much else off the bike, but i would get it back to bare metal and respray the whole thing, chainstay included. maybe powdercoat, then redo all the little yellow bits, add decals, and clearcoat the whole lot.

Interesting if it is indeed a 79-80 model that it has the old style campy hubs with straight levers on it, arguing for an "earlier" time frame. I would guess all the "non-campy" stuff was added later. And the missing "chunk" from the bottom of the bottom bracket is also pretty scary!

It's an Opitical delusion, I often get that when looking at old bikes.

Now that I look again, you are right Otis, the peeling paint gives it a 3D look that seems to be "deeper" than it actually is!
