50s rear wheel hub internals.
So when I got my Huffy Bel Air it didn't work properly, having it upside down testing everything i thought the problem was the crank.(bearings)I recently decided to take a break from other stuff and find out if that was the problem.Turns out it wasn't.I took off the back wheel and chain and the crank ran smooth no problem, the rear wheel is.I decided to take it apart knowing that if something was wrong id more than likely just get a new wheel or if its fixable either by me or someone else id save them the hassle of taking it apart.Taking it apart i thought maybe the bearings were bad in the hub but found something else. Its a cylinder shaped metal piece with grooves on the outside of it,i have no clue what it is,it looks to be broke in 3 pieces.I took some pictures of all the pieces that were in the hub.I don't know what is bad or even how to put the whole system back together if its home fixable.I surfed google and found a diagram that look exactly like my hub.

I know nothing about wheels so if anyone can tell me if the piece i think is broke,is broke or where i could get a diagram of late 1950's hub internals,or if i could possibly bring the wheel to a local bike shop it they could put a new hub into my existing original wheel id greatly appreciate it!
This is the piece i was talking about.I thinking its the braking cylinder?

Nope, it isn't broken.
You'll find an exploded diagram of that hub under the 'General Resources' section of our site:

Ok so if thats not broken.Could the problem be the old grease?I checked all the bearings and they looked fine.

Ok i ran into problems.Since i had no clue what i was doing i found to a few diagrams of Bendix single speed exploded hubs..Either the diagrams are wrong,or someone goofed rebuilding the hub before i got it,and thats why it wasn't working right in the first place.I put it together just like the diagram showed but somethings wrong. It doesn't want to spin, and when i force it you can feel it go than it skips or something. Its very tough to spin.I cleaned and repacked all the bearings with grease.I have no clue whats going on.One thing i did notice was in the diagram the brake shoe is two pieces I have 3,its just one half and the other half is split in two, which was hard to put together.

Its a Bendix single speed.I did some tinkering and put the wheel on teh bike and went for a test drive. It works great, but the brakes dont work.LOL.I can pedal fine, and coast, but as soon as i reverse to put brakes on,somecatches and the pedals go forward.Im good without brakes. But would the brokes shoe cause problems?

I would start looking around for the same model hub. Hopefully you have something common like an RB-1 and can just scavenge the brake shoes from it.
