Insane price Raleigh Pro

Maybe I am wrong, but I think this auction seems like it got crazy out of hand.

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tab%3DWatching

$1028.00 for just the frame and fork, and the paint and chrome are in poor shape. I realize that this has the fastback seat stay cluster, sloping fork crown, and chrome... but its also a very large frame.

I bought this one, and I still feel like I bid too high:

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200268688426.

I know I have asked this alot, but I still haven't gotten an answer. Are the cable guides on the top tube of the Mk V original?? He claims the paint is original, but I can't find a pic of the Mk V frame with cable guides. Also, the lugs are not lined with gold paint, did they stop doing that for this year, or is this just a good repaint???

Thanks,
Matt

Yeah, that seems pretty out of hand. No idea on your questions. Although, if that's what someone is willing to pay, so be it.

Best,
Kevin

I saw the $1028 price on the frameset last night. Absolutely nuts. $400 plus , maybe. You can buy a complete used bike for less than that.

1971 Raleigh Professional MK II frameset. Unfortunately, the paint is shot, and the chrome is too pitted to polish out. The Raleigh and Professional decals are very faded, and the Reynolds & Carlton decals are gone.

The seller has to be ecstatic at the price it sold for.

You paid $364.00 for your frame & fork? Outrageous! I paid less than $40.00 for mine. (that's mock outrage)

It's all about perspective. I gave up worrying about what people pay for stuff.

I know what you mean too. I certainly wouldn't have paid that for it.

I was assuming that someone would have a reason this particular frame went so high, I did'nt mean it to come off as looking down on anyone. I write most of these things in the very early morning so I will blame being tired.

I don't think it was that at all actually. More me being a little bit of a smart aleck on my reply.

I'm totally at a loss on that one also, but there's always a story behind it. Maybe we'll get to hear it.

I wonder about the rarity of a frame in such a large size. The size might be why it went for such a high price.

Then again, do not discount the "Rosebud" effect. <-- reference there to "Citizen Kane".

Yeah, I love that color too. Why does the rear derailer say "Rally", should'nt it say "campagnolo Nuovo Record"?

You could be right, ebay and emotion are a potent combination. I was also watching this Gazelle frame:

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=250317518588

but since I knew even less about Gazelles that I do Raleighs, I decided not too. It looks like a good price though, I think I read that AA is the highest frame over A and AB.

I bought and sold several Raleigh Professionals and Internationals a few years ago. Large frames didn't sell well and neither did the small ones. The 22 1/2" and 23 1/2" did.

You did not pay too much. $364 is completely reasonable for a very nice Pro frame these days. The earlier ones tend to bring in a little more money, but in excess of $1000 for just the frame is nuts. I just recently watched a complete bike in need of new chrome but with all the Campy bits go for just shy of $1000 and that was a Mk I. Also, I don't care what he says, that front fork on the $1000 frame is bent. My MK I frame was slightly less than what you paid, but it is in red powder coat and not original livery. And I got it locally not on eBay (eBay has higher prices usually).

Nobody mentioned the bid history. It appears that the winning bidder opened with a high bid and another bidder kept bidding, pushing the selling price thru the ceiling.

Yeah wow! It seems like putting such a high automatic bid at the start really drove that up. I made the same mistake, my auction was just over 100.00 and I put a top bid of 200.00 in early. By the time I got home someone had raised it up well over my bid.

I tossed my hat in early but left for Vegas and missed the action at the end. I had a fairly good look at it when it was on CL (for $300). The lugwork and drops, etc. were very nice. Not something that can be said for a lot of Pros (especially after Mk IIs). And of course it's the blue mink. I think you did just fine. Congrats.

Rally was Campy's long cage touring derailleur.

Cool, thanks for the info on it. I was worried about the top tube braze ons not being original, but I actually prefer having them instead of the clamps. The condition looks great in the ebay photos, but you never know until it arrives. I can't wait to get it, I have reproduction decals and campy components to put on it. This is my first higher end bike, and I have become totally obsessed. I have an old steel crank, and it is amazing to see and feel the difference between it and my campy crank.

Good to know, the world of Campagnolo is still very new to me. I say world, but maybe religion or cult would be a better term?

That price is pretty crazy. My guess is the buyer really wanted it and put in a silly high max, never dreaming that anyone would bid it up to that level. Why anyone did is a mystery.

As for yours, build it up and ride it, then let us know if you paid too much. I'm not sure about the cable guides, but the shifter lugs give me pause. I'd have expected clamp-on shifters on a frame of this vintage. But I could be wrong.
