I picked a used B17 and have been riding it. It seemed soft, so I was going to give it a turn. When I looked at the nose the tension pin is not sitting inside the hole. I can't figure out how to get it back in. I don't want to turn the nut to far for fear of stretching the leather too much before the pin slips back in. It currently rest in the nose piece and not aligned with the front hole.

The tension bolt head slides into the slot of the tension shackle at the forward end of the nose. It's tension nut pushes against the frame. Try backing the nut off towards the nose to release all tension, then try sliding the tension bolt head into the tension shackle slot. Then tighten the tension bolt nut against the frame until the degree of tautness desired is achieved.
