    Old Peugeot bike-converting....

    Hello.
    I have a late 70's or early 80's Peugeot road bike that i'm converting to a daily commuter.
    I've put fends on it, and i'm looking to switch the handlebar to a Nitto North road bar for a more upright position.

    In researching to do so, i'm found out through many websites that this handlebar does accept bar end shifters or road brake levers, any truth to this? If so, how come?

    If anyone is familiar with this bar, and can also recommend something this looks similar to this that would be great! I'm looking to change my hand position to be parallel to the top tube.

    Nitto bars that are steel or heat-treated alloy should accept bar-end shifters. The standard alloy ones won't, as the tubing diameter is too small.

    Correct, the inside diameter is too small to accept bar end shifters and the outside diameter is to small to accept road brake levers. You will need to use flat bar levers.

    If you want bar end shifters and road levers, you could use moustache bars.

    Ok, thanks for the info.

    I'm having problems locating bars like the Nitto North road (parallel to the tob tube). Any other brands or styles that you guys recommend? and where can I get these? Even used is OK.

    Northroad bars will not put your hands anywhere near parallel to the top tube. Look at the Albatross at rivbike.com. They're close to what you are looking for and they accept bar end shifters. Also check Velo Orange.

    Another issue you may have is the stem not accepting the bars.....If it's an old Peugeot the ID of the stem is 25mm vs. the more standard measurement of 25.4. I just ran into that problem myself when putting on some VeloOrange bars. I lucked out and found several 22mmx25.4 (vs. French standard 22x25)stems to make the bar swap a snap. I have a CTA and an ITM. I settled on the ITM 'cause it looks spiffy.

    P.S. Check out VeloOrange or Jitensha Studio for sweet upright bars.

    I used 25.4mm bars on a 25mm French stem for many years. I just pried open the clamp and shoved the bars in. That was before I knew better.

    Some of the Velo Orange upright bars are road bike diameter and won't take 7/8" mountain levers, but will take bar end shifters. Yhe Jitensha bars are 7/8" diameter, but require a road stem.

    Actually the stem is 25.4.

    does anyone have these kicking around? wishfull thinking?

    bar conversion

    Beware using the old Peugeot stem. Some of these are notorious for breaking due to metal fatigue. I had it happen on a 1972 PN10? and have read of several other folks with the same problem. Replace it if there is any doubt as to its security. We can all ride with no hands, but not while tangled in cables and holding bars that are not attached to the bike. tom

    bars with dubious stem

    Hey, he's not likely to like the bars if they are swinging the breeze. I'd change the stem and add the bars to the new one. tom

    Hey Nigel,

    Are moustache bars an option for you? I may be able to get my hands on a pair for you. They would certainly accept bar-end shifters. Lemme know before I throw these in the mail manana...

    my seating position would be too forward with the moustache bars.

    yes, i have a pair of spare barend shifters from rivbike and they fit inside. ok, the north road bars it is - i'm headed to the post office at lunchtime...ken
