Motobecane questions

I have a Grand Jubilee that I bought in 1975. It is not a "true" french bike; it will take a standard seat post and such. It has a stronglight 49 crank which is still in exceptional condition, but I was thinking about changing the chain wheel sizes and I don't think there are many different choices other than the 42/52 which I have now. Which leads to my questions. Are there any current production crank sets that will fit the stronglight squared bottom bracket? Or if I have to replace the B.B. how can I determine what the threading is on the cups?

If it's a Stronglight 49D, you can have lots smaller chainwheels than 42t. If it's a mod 93, smallest you can go is 38t, I believe, and those are pretty hard to find. To confirm what you have, look up Stronglight cranksets in velobase.com.

My 76 Grand Record took a square tapered Sugino Compact 50/36 crank set.

I think you can get a 38 from xxcycle, but it won't match vintage rings.

You can use either Stronglight or TA chainrings. To change the 52, you'll have to replace it with a different outer ring. They're not cheap new (www.velo-orange.com), but you can find them on eBay if you do a search for (stronglight, TA, "T.A.", "T. A", Specialites, Specialités) (49D, 49, Cyclotouriste, Pro 5) -- use the parens. Alternatively, you could get a (more common) 110 BCD crankset and matching BB to suit it. I am almost certain that your BB is French threaded, so that might present a problem. My guess is that the cheapest solution would be to fork out for the chainring you want that will fit your (extremely nice) crankset.

In that case, you can use TA rings, and you can get an inner as small as 26t:

https://www.velo-orange.com/tapro5visch.html

A fairly common setup with a TA Pro Vis 5 or a Stronglight 49D is 48-50t outer ring and 34t inner ring. That range will suite most terrain.
