Or if you're really bold, try Windows ME. (Millenium Edition...)

I managed to crash my copy in less than a month.

Month? Mine crashed multiple times per hour. Worst operating system ever.

Sounds like no one has spent any quality time with Vista. I thought this was a C&V group. Someone on here has to be using Win 3.1 or DOS.

No, Zorro, I meant, CRASH it, so that windows would open but appear empty (even though files were in them) and most of the buttons wouldn't work when I clicked them, the computer ceased to FUNCTION! But mine did crash all the time also. I remember the computer itself was made by a brand I liked that went out of business... Small red text logo, I'm thinking "costco" for some reason although that's not where it came from... Anyway.

Yeah.

Unworthy, I may interested in that if Robtown isn't. Would it fit a headtube from a 56 frame?

I kind of liked Win ME. My son's "old game" computer is running ME.

I think it was Fall 2001 (but the gig ethernet is newer). The frame I'm looking for could be much older.

I could also use an non suspension hybrid frame that accepts 700c wheels.

That prompted me to actually get it out (better than going from MY memory) and measure: it's got a looong steerer, 240mm with 65mm of threading, and it's got Gipiemme forged ends and it's more a tomato red (not so dark). The reason I say it's Oria is that it has Oria TT 0.9 stickers on the blades and no rifling in the steerer, but no guarantee it is what it says (tho I believe it). It's also a pretty *beefy* fork (that is: no lightweight), keep that in mind.

Oh god, no. Especially for anything used for gaming - he'd be better of with Win 98SE. ME is nothing but 98SE with a RAM-hogging problem.

He'd be better off wiping a spare HD, loading an old 98SE onto it, and using it as a master, while setting the ME drive as a slave with his old stuff.

Yeah.
Compaq?

They were deceny systems, bought out by HP, if I remember correctly. I always liked ME, never had any problems, and I was running alot of media software( photo and video editing, and music creation and production).

Eh - can't agree. I don't care for their pre-installed copies of Windows - IIRC, they make a small partition on the HD that makes access of the drive from a non-Compaq motherboard - as a slave - nearly impossible.

Really? I wasn't doing much system building when these things were popular. Why couldn't you just erase the partition and reload OS?

Could be done, if it was an OEM CD. If it was a Compaq-specific version of the OS, you wouldn't be as lucky.

Ugh. WinME was horrendous, and locked up for no apparent reason several times a day...even after a fresh reinstall.

Delete all the existing partitions with a Win98 boot floppy, FDISK and reformat the drive, use the drive utils from the drive maker (just about any hd but Toshibas) to totally zero the drive, use Partition Magic, etc. You can skin that cat six ways to Sunday.

No kidding...unless there was data on that Compaq-version-of-Windows-ME that you were interested in keeping/transferring. Conceivably, if you're in a situation with a fried motherboard, and you slave-drive the HD to another board that isn't Compaq-specific...forget it. One thing is the stupid little bootup partition they came up with - another thing is simply wiping it, anyone can do that in less then 5 minutes with that boot floppy (or with the XP CD utils).

That said, I'm through with the "supplied" manufacturer-specific OS's. Everything that I have now is OEM XP Pro, with three exceptions - OEM Windows 98SE dual booted with Damn Small Linux on an IBM Thinkpad 380XD, OEM Windows 2000 Professional on a useless little HP e-Vectra, and OEM XP x64 (what a dog) on my main box.

Amen to that dog Kurt, running the same pitiful slob on my main box and dual-booting Ubuntu/XP Pro on an old IBM Think Pad 2700.

Anyone got anything to trade???
