Four hours to go, on the road to $6,000.

at $5,850. with a new experienced bidder, number 8.

A sniping program will even cost a bit at this level.

$6,858 with 5mins on the clock......

bidder r**r is blowing his load too early - up over $7,000 with 3 mins to go. Now, n**g is attacking with 2 mins to go.

But, r**r hangs on to win at $7,200. Hmmmm..... if he applys for an eBay Visa he saves 15%, and maybe he has a 10% eBay coupon to stack on. If so, what a deal!!!

I think Cyclart did have something to do with the transaction... but I found in photos of the event that the number does not match the number of the Confente that was at Velo Renezvous.

ebay I would think would have some limits of total savings, otherwise its just not like them.

Or will they just be happy for the discount they charge the seller?

I do have one of those 10% coupons, but I never have read the fine print, I was always wary of it until I found it on "my ebay". So, I will have to read it to see.

The bidding by r**r was classic ebay young one.

look for a tall guy who happened on this or the CR list at the right time, someone who dislikes ebay and does not read about how it works, and how to win effectively. Also, a guy with some ego who was Desperate to win that bike, he kept adding insurance bids after the others' collectively had hit their limit. With two insurance bids, if a challenger had tossed in a bid, the total might have gone 200 to 600 higher. Impressive, bewildering.

I'd think there is shill bidding on a lot of these auctions, not saying it happened here. That's just one of the many reasons I feel stupid if I bid with more than 13 seconds left.

Well, a strategic shill bidder will drop out prior to the end, the fees will have to be paid... unless that no good zero feedback bidder just evaporates? Will the fees still need to be paid? Or does it depend on weather the runner up passes on a second chance offer? Anyone with experience on this?

Posted on the Classic Rendezvous forum:

"I've been informed by the Confente family that they are the winners of the
auction. They wrote, "Finalmente una bici Confente torna a casa!!!"
(Finally, a Confente bicycle returns home.")"

That would explain the zero feedback winner and the "panicked" bidding at the end.

Well now. That is cool. I wonder how long they have been trying to get one.

Part of vintage bike lore is the (true) story of someone who bought one at the Trexlertown, PA swap several years ago for, if memory serves, $500.

It is stories like these that keep us looking, isn't it.

A little bit sad to me that the family of a deceased member has to bid on ebay to acquire a memorabilia.

I wonder how the auction would have gone if this was well known before it ended. I for one would have stepped back and let the bike go to where it belonged.

Best, Jan

If it were well known then maybe it would have gone higher.

Way too rich for my wallet. Were you bidding on it?

OTOH, maybe the seller needs the money for a worthy purpose. Most stories have more than one side to them.

Sadly, the usual case.

I have a very famous close relative, and if I want something I have to buy it, just like anyone else. Good or bad, most things I can't afford...

It was known that the family wished the auction pulled in order for it to be aquired by them, the question was in Italian, so my reading of it might be off. It was answered that the seller was just a mere agent, so he could not end the auction early.

Too bad there was no one to consul the family on ebay strategy, it really only matters at the end.

As far as it being a problem for the family to have to acquire on the open market for one, a CR listmenber posted an inquiry for one for the family, obviously, not answered.

There was a blog that included a visit to the family within the past year. They were not aware that Mario was so highly regarded. They did have some neat photos, Mario with Merckx, Mario with Tullio and a Confente t-shirt.
