POLL: what to do with Catch of the Day & Saved from the Dump threads

I am going to be changing the C&V sticky line-up back to something closer to what we had before. However there are going to be some changes. And in the spirit of giving ya'll some input we are going to make a couple polls in these cases.

Currently we are going un-combine the "Catch of the Day" and "eBay / CL finds" threads. We also had unstuck the "Saved from the dump" thread. Do ya'll think it better that we:

A) leave "Catch of the Day" stuck & "Saved from the Dump" thread unstuck.

or

B) Combine "Catch of the Day" and "Saved from the Dump" threads. (I hope this combo makes more sense than with ebay/cl finds).

Yes, those are the options. We are looking at having 11 stickies with the original(ish) setup.

I like the stickies. I like the parallel ongoing conversations they provide. I'm glad the Catch of the Day is going to be separate from the ebay/cl thread again. Having running discussion of bikes for sale via ebay/cl in one place is very convenient. Catch of the Day seems to be more about neat finds, gifts, thrift store discoveries, etc--and usually features bikes that have already been purchased.

One thing that might make sense would be to move the ebay/cl thread to the valuation sub-forum, since that's often what the discussion of the items revolves around, but I'll leave that to wiser and more senior members. (Might make sense for Numbskull too?)

It makes sense for 'Saved from the Dump' to be a normal thread, as it isn't always active. I doubt it will ever be in danger of falling off the front page.

I wonder of the forum software could be altered to display the stickies in a compressed two column format, above the normal threads, if screen real-estate is the issue here--since we don't really need to see all the stats on the stickies to decide whether we want to read them, as one might do w/a regular thread:

************|**************
STICKY 1--------|STICKY 5---------
STICKY 2--------|STICKY 6---------
STICKY 3--------|STICKY 7---------
STICKY 4--------|STICKY 8---------
============================
--NORMAL THREADS BLAH BLAH-----
--NORMAL THREADS BLAH BLAH-----
--NORMAL THREADS BLAH BLAH-----

anyway, thanks for eliciting user input, that's always nice.

My thoughts are that the Catch of the Day and the Saved from the Dump threads are where people show what they got, whereas the Ebay/CL Finds thread is for telling others of something interesting that they came across but are not going to go for. One is a birddog thread showing what they fetched, the other is a birddog thread pointing to where something is, as a sort of hunting season analogy.

Not sure if my thoughts are relevent or not.

I always saw the "Saved from the Dump" as a subset of the "Catch of the Day" so, in the spirit of minimum number of stickies to accomplish the task I voted for combining and making it sticky.

Otherwise, with all due respect to those with access to the dumps, I see no real value of the Dump thread that makes it more unique than:

Thrift Store Finds
Craigslist Purchases
Bought from Ebay
Garage Sale/Yard Sale Finds
Freecycle finds
Look what my buddy gave me

I have no problem with the COTD thread being combined with the Dump thread. In fact, before the Dump thread was minted, dump finds were the gutbucket end of the COTD thread, right?

Just cool stuff, all together in one "hey, look what I found" thread. It sounds like it could be my new favorite stickie.

I vote to combine them also, makes the most sense. But ultimately my preference would be to do away with both. I don't often look at them because they tend not to be that interesting. If someone has a really interesting find they usually start their own seperate thread about it and I can decide whether to read about it or not based on the title.

The Catch of the Day and Saved threads are an after the fact - look what I've found / done threads. As such they should combine. The ebay/craiglist thread is more a look what's available thread that should be separate.

I wouldn't mind the Saved and COTD threads combined either. The Ebay and CL is a seperate thing as some have already stated. I usually look over the Catch posts every time one pops up on my email. It's interesting to know what's out there to be found, and things that turn up. I see bikes at least once or twice a week that I didn't know existed. A neat cross section of what is turning up on any given day.,,,,BD

This is so true... I sporadically read the COTD thread.

If nothing else it does serve as a place for people to post about their finds that maybe don't warrant a distinct thread. It does give a chance to crow about a find that may not be as noteworthy as some others. As a side benefit to people that aren't all that interested, it cuts down on the individual "look at what I got" threads.

I sure enjoyed the Vintage rides sticky, it appeared very popular and was the best place to see pictures of classic and vintage bicycles. Great for reference and seeing what was once common, but not so much anymore. Even back then, we only really saw the bikes that were local, among our club rides, etc. A lot of other models may have been out there, but were only really known by word of mouth. This sticky allowed me to see many of those legendary frames, with comment. A great walk through yesteryear, or a ride down memory lane .

I vote to leave the two separate. If they both cannot be stickied, then I vote to combine them, so that they'll stay stickied.

I voted for combined. In my mind a dump/curb find is still a COTD in it's own way.

An abandoned, trashed or scrapped bike is different from an auctioned or CL'd find. I think saved from the rubbish tip should stand alone. It has it's own unique appeal to me.

I agree (and voted for combining COTD and "Saved from the Dump"). While COTD and Ebay/CL are both "look at this!" threads, the similarity stops there. Having to preface each post with "look at this, it's something you might want to own," or "look at this, it's something I now own for cheap," is cumbersome and confusing.

I think each thread merits "sticky" status, just not as a combo.
