42 miles on the De Rosa. Low 50s and sunny; felt colder. Scituate-Glocester RI.

Jim you need to bring the Masi down to the little states some Sunday before it gets too cold.

Took the Santa Ana river trail from Ange'ls stadium down to Huntington Beach. From my house all together, just over 30 miles. It was pretty warm today, but a nice southern California day. First long ride on the Gitane in a while, as it is usually used for shorter trips.

Got back in the hills today - only it was a little chilly which affected the lungs a little.

If I had known the road had been packed down so much I would have taken a smooth tire bike

Looked like this when I started:

Started looking a little ominous toward the house:

scozim- what a difference between our pictures! Granted mine was a week ago, but still we are both west coast. We are having a little rain down here, but nothing like that. I am hoping to get out on the trail this weekend if weather permits. I may head inland instead this time...

Scott: wow, from the first photo I'd have never guessed it would've ended up the way it did! Yikes

Alex Moll and I went out on a short, double-Colnago Vet's Ride at noon today. Temps were in the mid-40s, no wind, no clouds and no rain. Short but sweet, with lunch in a classic diner in Arlington (cup o' Joe: 75 cents). Perfect!

I took two bikes: Alex will be keeping my '83 Colnago Mexico on ice for me until such time as I either return to live or return to visit. I rode the '73 Super.

Car loaded up with both bikes:

I'm going to miss that gold machine:

'73 Super at our meeting spot; Arlington Station rest stop:

Sure looks like fall to me:

Descending the section I've dubbed the "Fuchsrohre" - lots of others out on the bikes, too:

The barn at the northernmost trailhead is now painted a jaunty shade of red:

The barn - note the historic photos on the side:

Barn detail:

Colnago at the barn:

A few more to come...

Yep, I was there, too:

Thanks, Alex - and Happy Veteran's Day to you and all the other Vets on the Forum!

My sweetie said "Take the Masi out for a spin. Have fun and be careful." That's like saying "Eat all you want and save room for dinner." Okay, so maybe being careful really is a good idea.
That's better than I can usually get on a lunchtime ride, so be happy. I'm tracking my rides using an app on my phone, but I think I'm going to do like rhm and start saving the length and total ascent of my rides in a spreadsheet. I keep adding them up over and over and it makes more sense to just keep a spreadsheet.

I get cold just thinking about riding in 35 weather, especially since the sun wasn't out. Good on you scozim!

I rode through a bunch of new towns.

Glocester RI

Thompson CT

Red White School House Woodstock CT

So the placard in front of the building said that this is the first and last of the 13 one room school houses in Wooidstock. It was founded in 1705 and was painted red until it burned in 1873. When they built this structure to replace it they painted it white. All the town folk called it the red white school house after that, sic the name. If you look close you can see my De Rosa. I had a pbj break on the steps.

Abington CT Congregational church built 1751. The oldest standing continuously used church in CT.

Hampton CT

Plainfield CT

hexagonal painted rock with American flag on each side with sickle and hammer imposed on top. Weird.

I didn't take any pictures in MA, but I did stop at a bike shop in Southbridge to ask for directions and talked for a while with the owner who was very gregarious.
Great set of pictures JJScaliger. I do find some humor in the hammer and sickle painted on top of the flag. I am just amazed at the quality of the pictures you take. Seriously.

Good stuff Jim. I take it you left the turkeys to fatten up a bit more, eh? I'm really happy to see that tandem getting ridden as much as it is. I'd be happy to ride our tandems even half what you're able to accomplish, but as it stands we're doing about 1/4 what you're doing! BTW, i know how good the lunches are that Sharon prepares. I'm envious!

That's it! Next year, I'm going to have to do a ride with you. Seeing all these great places where you ride is just too much to bear.

- Finally another 8-10 miles riding yesterday on an old three speed Huffy mixtie getting around the gun club (I was a supervising range officer, so needed to bounce from range to range all day to keep tabs on things). Pulled the mixtie from the scrap bin where someone had left it for recycling, fixed a couple things, pumped up the tires, viola). Sort of odd, me riding a green mixtie around the club against the backdrop of hunters and the constant gunfire. Yes, I took some guff for it, but would do it again. Love those old three speeds, and it beat walking for sure.

And good luck through the hurricane, to those out east.
Sounds like fun, especially riding the mixte at the gun club! Besides, taking a little guff builds character. As far as old three speeds, I'm a fan too. Give me 3, 4 or 5 speeds any day. It's really all most people need. BTW, I've been riding a purple CCM mixte in the computrainer classes I've been doing with my wife the last few weeks. It's been a character building experience for sure, but despite the "limitations" of an old 12 speed bike against the much more modern bikes in the class, with 9 and 10 speed rear clusters and mostly triple chainsets, I've done exceedingly well. In the final heat, I managed to place third, less than a second behind the other two guys.

Doohickie, that looks like fun. The closest I've come to a pub crawl was a ride I took along with KonAaron Snake on his triplet a couple weeks ago when I was up at the Philadelphia Bike Expo.

How many were along for the ride?

The cyclo-computer perhaps needs new batteries. Now about the GPS: Given you're not actually moving, that might explain why it's not showing any mileage.

What kind of bike is that? I can see it came out of the Raleigh empire, but can't tell which marque. Is it a Phillips?

I really like that old headstone. Can you decipher what it says? The picture isn't high enough resolution for me to make out the text.

Mid-50's here also - got in 25 miles for lunch with the Spectrum and the newly installed Suntour Sprint crankset. I definitely could feel a difference - not sure why because my legs were tired from yesterday. The cranks actually don't seat as far in as the Sakae CR ones did and maybe that's the difference. Great, fast ride on a wonderful bike.
Spectrum? Where's the thread on that one? I see there are a handful of pictures on your blog. I take it that the ti Spectrum is what you're referring to here.

Seems you've been doing a good bit of solo riding. Didn't you just do several days on the trainer or did you have the tandem set up on it.

BTW, I like the approach you took to getting a ride in, though I'm sorry you had to contend with going for a ride with someone on a half-bike.

Jim you need to bring the Masi down to the little states some Sunday before it gets too cold.
Right there is what riding is all about!

18 easy miles on the 1986 Trek TX900. This is the stiffest steel bike I've ever ridden. A 25 mph headwind made the last 6 miles a little more work than I was expecting.

Looks like some great riding in the CA wine country. Do you have any idea what that bike is hanging from the ceiling? To me, it looks like some American made path racer.
