We did 20 at 20 for the first time ever.
The last hill dropped us to 19.7 for the trip.

Yeah, I'm still buzzed about it, since I was on a 1984 steel bike....

We do night time rides in the summer. Granted, we don't have much traffic, once outside of the city.

Yes, it's considerably dangerous to ride here in Phoenix day or night due to our drivers.
During the peak of Summer, it's still too hot to ride at night. Due to the heat island effect, it can be 99F at midnight. By late July I stop trying to ride during the night.
Only the diehard riders start their days at 4:30 to get in a pre-dawn ride with 85-90F temps. We have a lot of heat-stroke victims here. Sadly it's mostly high school kids forced to train in this sun.

We rode ours for 42.3 miles today. Autumn has arrived. Temperatures have fallen. Trees are turning color.

Got out for our annual local metric century today with Roger M and Northbend - it was a gathering of Cino riders again. Pretty cold start at around 36 degrees F. The afternoon ride back was much more comfortable on the way out. At least a few of the hills warmed us up some.

Getting ready for the last hill of the day - yes, it's there. You stare at Hungry Junction hill for a good 1.5 miles before you actually get to it. At this stage in the day it just looks like a wall.

49 miles on a day better suited to ducks than bikes. My bike is now a total mess, but I'm no longer stir crazy from two days of not riding due to work/rain. 'Tis the season for slippery wet leaves around here.

Realized, I forgot the "where" part. Went up to Stillwater, Marine, then to the Gateway trail and back home...

Today was wonderful riding weather, blue skies and 70F this morning and 88F late in the day.
I rode out to Tempe Town Lake to check out the festivities of the Tour de Fat. I arrived in time to join the bike parade and cruised with all the party goers. A father and his son noticed my Benotto and informed me he used to race an 84 Italian-made model before trying a Cannondale.
A good fun day with a 27 mile round trip.

We went out to Lake Minnetonka on the other side of the metro.

Went to watch our neighbor race in a regatta!

Today we are heading down to Mankato for the Ramble this morning, then cross races late this afternoon.

Nice to see some pics from the Manastash Metric Century (Scozim, RogerM and Northbend) and the Tour de Fat (WNG)! Scott, that pic of Roger climbing one of the first hills brought back memories; thanks for that one. And Will, what the heck is the Fat ride? Sure looks strange but fun and interesting. I have to put that on my Bucket List

Did our now-traditional Sunday-morning 25-miler at 0730 today; as last Sunday, brunch followed. Got six of the guys out for this one. The plan now is for each ride participant to make a separate dish for brunch immediately following the ride. I'm the designated breakfast-sausage preparer for next Sunday

I followed up with 2 miles in the pool, taking me to 31. Well on course to attain my goal of 100 miles in the pool before I transfer (hopefully in late March).

I squeezed in a short 30 mile ride this morning in Scituate. It rained for a little while and was kind of cold with a high of 55. I wore a long sleeve jersey for the first time in months.

I was hailed down by three riders for a pump a couple of miles from home. They were doing a metric century for the Gran Fondo New England. One of the guys scrutinized my Gitane and said, " He only has 5 gears in the back!"

I'm on my way to catch the tail end of the Providence Cyclocross Festival at Roger Williams Park.

It's New Belgium Brewery's annual city-to-city bikes and beer fest. They do it in on the first weekend of Oct in Tempe. It's kind of like Mardi Gras on bikes, lot's of their brews flowing, stages with concerts, comedians and shows. Creative alt-bikes to ride, and lots of people in costume, riding custom bikes of all sorts. I went almost every year except last year (for obvious reasons) to take in the silliness. Fun way to spend a Saturday.

I avoided the hills as much as I could, within reason, but still had over 3000 feet of climbing, in a bit under 60 miles. Tiring!

My first week in the Shenandoah Valley was 20 degrees above normal. And then, on Monday, reality set in. I'm trying to get in at least 25 miles per day in an effort to offset the effects of my mom's cooking.

The first shot is of the ride, an 87 Schwinn Prelude in Ice Pink. The more observant might notice the Ronald MacDonald tire set that came to me compliments of Dr. Cannondale. It has been such a delight to ride in hills again. This is a truly wonderful part of the world to be riding in.

I managed 57 miles today, all in RI. This is the best time of year in New England; high of 60, sunny and crisp. I did have a 20 mph headwind for the way home, but still an incredible day.

I gave the De Rosa a turn. It rides like a dream.

I rode 5 miles on dirt with my 23mm tubulars with dt shifts on lugged steel. I'm ready for L'Eroica, Cino Heroica; I just need a sponsor!

Wow, everyone's getting these great water shots in their posts! Guess I'm not the only lucky one to be out in that stuff, but here's mine...

Today I took some shots of the Spruce Railroad Trail around Lake Crescent, about 20 miles west of where I live, Port Angeles, WA. Most of it is a railroad grade, as the name would suggest, and so it's all very flat, except at the beginning. It starts near here, where the Lyre River empties out of Lake Crescent.


I had the trail all to myself today, because this is in the Olympic National Park, which at this time is technically "closed," since defunding the ACA is so terribly important and vital to our national interest.

When you pick up the trailhead, you cut through the woods for awhile, in shady and muddy single track climbing and descending for about a mile and half, then suddenly you're skirting the very edge of the lake most of the rest of the way, just like the logging trains did nearly a century ago.


At a place called "Devil's Punch Bowl" there's a little bridge that continues the trail past a tiny inlet with impossibly steep rock walls




The path alternates wide and narrow, smooth and bumpy as all-get-out with softball sized "gravel," tree roots, boulders and little streams marking up the path.


You could get through this on a touring bike, if you're patient and don't mind getting off to walk past the crazy parts, but if you do it on a mountain bike you can go fast and test your technical skills, staying in the saddle (or more likely, standing on the pedals) in all but a few very tricky places.



After 4 miles of bashing around the edge of the lake, it suddenly turns into a six mile stretch of perfect chipseal, eight feet wide with shoulders of gravel, supposedly for the equine crowd (never seen them on this trail before). It's so flat and smooth, it's downright boring. Here is yrs trly chillaxing on one of the trail bridges along the way.


The trail ends up at Hwy 101 where the Sol Doc Hot Springs Road meets it and from there you can ride a couple miles back down Fairholme Hill to the far west end of the lake for one last nice photo op. The afternoon light is pretty amazing this time of year.
