    All of the pictures I showed were in the vicinity of Lincoln City (on the coast), which is where I grew up. Most of the forest pictures were taken on a road that goes through the coastal mountains just east of L.C.. Look up bear creek/drift creek roads. You won't find much about cycling them as there aren't many cyclist's up there. If you look up Drift Creek hiking trail you might be able to get information on how to get there, the road goes right by the trail head (I recommend the hike as well). That road is great on a bike it has quite a bit of climbing and descending opportunity, several incredible viewpoints and most of the single lane paved road is well maintained (though there is one section of bear creek road that has about a mile of gravel, and watch out for log trucks). Another nice section of road in the area is the old scenic highway in Otis. It is also a fun curvy forest road with very little traffic. It is about 10 miles long and is the one I do when I want to get in a quick ride. Out and back on the old scenic is about a 25 miles round trip from my parents house. Just west of the old scenic is Three Rocks Road, which is only about 2.5 miles long from the highway but it ends at the beautiful bay I showed in the pictures. At the end of Three Rocks Road is also the hike I showed pics of (Cascade Head).

    The other area I did some cycling at while I was in Oregon was Quartzville Road, just out of Sweet Home. That is an incredible road for cycling. My family and I camped at SunnySide campground near the start of Quartzville Road (You may already be familiar with that road?). It goes around Green Peter reservoir and along a very nice clear river. I believe the whole road is just under 50 miles so if you were to do the whole thing out and back it would be about a century with a lot of climbing. I rode the first section several times (super early in the morning while the family slept) but I didn't want to abandon my family too much so I never made it past about half way up, but I really want to do the whole thing next time I get a chance. Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera on any of those rides but I really enjoyed riding out there.

    My commute

    Back to more mundane paths... today, I commuted. (somebody has to follow the tough acts, eh?)

    My driveway


    Mount Angeles road, where the commute starts to get seriously descending about 1/4 mile after this photo (35mph+ coasting)


    I usually veer off and take "the long way" through a new half-sold housing development with a really big wetlands preserve in the middle of it. It's got this nice MUP which is not technically open yet, but I've been riding up and down it nigh on two years now.


    I then cut through the parking lot of our local Institution of Higher Learning, such as it is.


    Then more hillbombing, down from the top of Ennis Street, rapid altitude loss, cover those brakes! Out in the harbor, that little grey and white boat passing by the huge blue tanker is the Coho ferry to Victoria, BC. Mountains of Vancouver Island are off on the horizon.


    Ennis Street passes by one of our local MMJ dispensaries. "Doctor, doctor, my legs are always sore this time of year, can you write me a script for something more natural than Motrin?" Moot point in a month or two, when the recreational dope stores open up. Weird, huh? And why has this moment been so long in coming? I won't be buying much (if any) but c'mon, people, it's a natural herb. Just chill, will you?

    And speaking of "Take-and-Bake", there's a Papa Murphy's pizza joint just one more block north of there. Synergy!


    Finally getting down to sea level, we pass though the old Rayonier mill site, which is pretty much cleaned up and waiting for redevelopment. A nice bike path runs through it, as it happens.


    Getting closer to downtown on the Olympic Discovery Trail


    And into the gritty urban streets of DowntownPort Angeles, where I spend most of my day. About 5.5 miles of very pleasant downhill commuting in about 20 minutes, losing about 1000 feet of elevation.

    The ride home is a bit more strenuous.

    No, I usually go home by a route that's a mile shorter; it's pretty relentless. And no, I don't commute by bike every day; only as much as I can when it's dry out.

    My grandparents live in PA and i spent most summers there, what a beautiful town. One of my favorites up in the northwest.

    We're notoriously soggy, here.

    But most days April through October are doable. Earlier or later than that and I run into darkness problems; Mount Angeles Road is kind of a steep, twisty path to be riding in the dark with little or no shoulder, and my neighbors in their big SUVs and pickups zooming by on their way to and from work.

    Nice to see more shots of the Northwest Caveman!

    I rode Pikes Peak Highway this morning for the first time. I see Pikes Peak every day and finally got the guts to give her a go (and the time). The road goes from about 7000ft to 14000 in 19 miles. My average speed was around 7.7mph the first half of the climb, but by the end it was a struggle to maintain 4mph. It took me right around 3 hours to get to the top. I could have used a compact crank-set there is no doubt about that. Some people must have been impressed because near the top about half the cars that passed yelled out the window encouragements to me, which was actually a bit helpful. The descent was fun, but there were a lot of cars in the way (possibly a good thing).

    Having once hiked at 14,000 ft (Mauna Kea) that figure doesn't sound too bad to me. Not much air up there. Compact crank indeed!

    Thursday was our 37th anniversary so we did a celebration ride on the tandem today, 41.8 miles. Bedford, Concord, Walden Pond and DeCordova Museum, Concord to Carlisle and back, 2A into Lexington, back along the MM to Bedford.

    Nice rides everyone! I got out today for about 35 miles, mostly in North Stonington and Voluntown. Stopped for lunch at a small park in the center of North Stonington.

    Then rode Route 49 on the way home, nice road.


    Cookout with the kiddos tomorrow, happy Fathers Day everyone.

    I did an event called the One and Done today. It was held on a new unopened portion of US31 between South Bend Indiana and Indianapolis. There was an 11 mile section the was used and there were ways to ride different distances. See bikemichiana.org for info and maps. It was well organized and the variety of bikes was amazing. There were a lot of c&v bikes to be seen. I rode an 86 Schwinn Peloton and my friend rode a 78 Le Tour 12.2. There was an event last weekend called Bike the Bend that was held in South Bend and Mishawaka that was a family oriented ride. Both of these were well attended and seems to have brought out a lot of people on dusted off bikes from out of the past.

    "Today" was a great ride but still got soaked riding in the clouds to long.
    Rode up Norton Summit Rd. got a nice comment about my pug from a passing road biker.

    Man it was cold heading back to the city!!!
