^ that's some really beautiful country you have there, chrome molly!

I gave my Bruce Gordon a well deserved refresh after I got home from my bike tour and I just finished a short shake down ride on it. I'll leave the fenders off for the rest of the summer.

I replaced the seat and handlebar tape. Both had seen almost 8 years of heavy use.

It look’s kind of “Bianchi-ish” to me now…

@Chrome Molly, that looks like a lot of fun. Nice gravel, and 4600' of climbing in 54 miles is respectable. I always think of MN as being fairly flat. What hills do you have around?

Most of the bigger hills are along the bluffs along the rivers (St Croix and Mississippi). But the terrain is also unglaciated/driftless (similar to southwestern Wisconsin) so every creek creates a valley that has a steady climb with a push up to the very top. If the climb hops to the next valley, it can easily be double digit grades. Usually the net climb is in the 300 to 500 foot range depending on how close to the river the creeks empty. It seems you're always going up or down.

Went for a 20 miler around Lake Sammamish today, first time I've gone that far in quite a while, A lovely day in the PNW and a good mix of riding surface. First half pavement, then asphalt bike path and transitioning to gravel for about 5 miles.

Is this the portion of the trail after Marymoor Park and before Issaquah? If so, it looks wider in this shot than it does from the saddle - at least when I'm riding on it!

I do this ride at least once, twice a week. I'll be on the lookout for those red-taped bars and say howdy

Yes its on the east side of the lake and this section is just past where the path construction that's just north of Issaquah (Paving?) stops, so probably 5 miles from Marymoor. Its the first time I've done that loop in about 7 years and I recall the path was all gravel back then. That section is pretty wide, most of the stuff closer to Marymoor is much narrower but I was digging the shade yesterday. I worked in Issaquah and then Redmond from 2000-2006 and this was a weekly after work ride for me.

Nothing terribly spectacular, but I spent a couple days in Southwest Michigan this week, and got to "commute" between my mom-in-law's beach house in Covert, and the building Ellen and I are renovating in South Haven. None of the individual rides were very long, only about ten miles each way, but it was nice to be on the bike.

Fire Lane 4, Covert, MI:

Just off the Blue Star Hwy, headed into South Haven (nice to see more bike highway signage - apologies for the crappy shot):

On the Van Buren Trail in South Haven:

Along the Black River (Kal-Haven Trail) right around the Blue Star Hwy. The river is very high right now. That gazebo in the background is under water.

The Local Dirt
Without getting into the steep and deep mountain bike territory I can put together a pretty nice dirt ride near my house by linking together a bunch of short trails and fire roads, none of them more than 2 miles long. They add up to about 12 miles in total. When you count the pavement riding to link together all these bits and pieces the entire ride is about 25 miles.

Some steep fire road, some skinny singletrack, and some nice view spots all add up to a very enjoyable way to pass an afternoon.

Thursday's sunny day ride

This mornings Nor'easter ride. Felt like I was riding in place at times with gust up to 30mph. The ride home was fun.

You're not kidding. The wind up my way was brutal. Non-stop headwinds.

A buddy and I got out for what turned into 54mi with lots of climbing. I regret not bringing the Garmin, we found some great new roads. Easy enough to find again.

Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven:

Next stop was New England Brewing Company:

Then a cool mix of roads, gravel and a quick stop at a skate park to mess around. Only one quick pic on that stretch during a rest stop...

Then a stop at Counter Weight Brewing:

The haul:

Not a bad day!

Great day yesterday!

Long rides through the Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge and the Mississippi river bottoms.

Miles and miles of gravel, with zero cars to deal with for hours on end.

Right in the middle of the metro area!
