Those look like they're nice tires. I have a set of Continental TourRide tires on my Cannondale and like them quite a bit. They are supposed to be 42-622 but measure 38mm on the rim. They are a really nice all around tire. I'd bet the T&C's are pretty cushy.

My sweetie and I did about 40 miles on the Peugeot (that's C&V) tandem today. After our 1-night tour last weekend the bike felt like a feather. Got back to the car about 15 minutes before the rain/t-storm hit. It's raining hard now. I finished up re-building a '72 Bertin last night and was going to take it for a short spin. Ain't going to happen today... Boom! splat! pitter patter pitter hissssssss

Lunch stop. If you can't have a picnic the ride isn't worth riding!

On the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

Second lunch in Carlisle Center (where all the good bikes go)
I believe you're riding your tandem nearly as much as the single bikes in your collection, Jim. You're going to have to point me to some of these places where you've been riding when we see each other in a few days. It ought to be fun riding our tandem with another tandem for the first time EVER! Woo-Hoo!

Normally night riders this time of year, we've been getting so much evening rain that we decided on a slightly longer than normal early morning ride. In Baca, at 8:30, where we should have circled back toward home, we made the hairbrained decision to ride another hour to the next town and have a sit down lunch. We knew this decision would cause much suffering at the end, but it was such an idyllic morning, riding roads we'd never been on before. The last hour, we rode through the inferno that is Yucatán in the summertime, and paid dearly. After we split up to ride to our separate homes, I took one more swig of water and knew that if I took another, I'd be sick. That kind of finish. The kind of decision one only makes with a bicycle between one's legs. 112 km, an accidental metric century.

Another great ride post JJScaliger! It's great to finally put a face to the name too.

BTW, even now after all the posts you've put in this thread, I'm still amazed you ride that bike with those narrow tires on those gravel roads like you do. I'd be afraid of rattling the fillings out of my teeth!

Middletown Morning Mayhem - Another Ride on the 1950 Norman Rapide. :)

I had a pretty good plan in place: get up by 5:30 AM and roll out the door by 6:30 AM. I was supposed to ride up to Middletown and then explore a little bit more around the area with plans of riding around 50 miles or so. The reality was that I ended up leaving the house around 9:45 AM and only rode a bit shy of 30 miles. Nevertheless, it was a good ride and I am finding that roads where I formerly walked my bike I am now riding up instead. I am especially proud of the fact that I'm not walking up hills even with only a 4-speed bike.

After debating which bicycle I was going to ride, I determined that I really wanted to ride my 1950 Norman Rapide since that bicycle is such a blast to ride. It's not high tech by any stretch of the imagination, but it rides so well and has so much style, that it is damned hard to go for a ride and not want to take it along. For those that like numbers: I rode 29.75 miles, averaged a rolling speed of 13.1 MPH, with a top downhill speed of 36.9 MPH and climbed 1,623 feet over the course of the ride. I have determined that the wheel odometer is off by a good margin. As a result, the actual mileage on this bicycle is higher than indicated. I'm going to calculate the actual mileage one of these days. Obligatory pictures follow.

You get used to it. I rode for about 5 miles on a paved road with some road racer types yesterday and one of them, who was new to the area (from DC), said it was surprising how many of the secondary roads would have dirt portions. I said, "Those are the fun parts on 23s!" He diplomatically responded, "It definitely calls for different skills." It's tough to climb on the loose stuff. Two weeks ago I saw a skinny tire vestige on one of the roads I ride, so I'm not alone. I only do small sections though; today was just approx. 2.6 miles. If I was doing longer sections I probably would rattle my fillings out!

BTW I think your old school odometer is cool. Just figure out the calculus to get real mileage. Maybe double check your ride with mapmyride. My mileage comes out very close every time.

Of course, how green it is over summer varies wildly throughout the country. In the east it tends to stay green, whereas in the west it can get quite brown.

My son and I rode with a small group of friends up to Artist Point at Mt. Baker.

My son riding my MXL wearing my stuff - looks better in it than me!

The ride opens up spectacularly at the Mt Baker Ski Area.

There's still a bit of snow up here… I packed sausage, cheese, pita bread, hummus and wine in the handlebar bag for a picnic lunch in the parking lot here. we dined in Cino style.

On the way back down we had to stop at this point for the classic group photo

My son leaves to go home to Colorado in a few days. I sure have enjoyed his visit.

That isn't really true. The problem is the "nearly as much" part. Been riding tandem way more!
But today I did the commute train/bike thing , first time in several weeks. And every so often Sharon unlocks my chain and tells me to go riding.

That's the plan! We're looking forward to it and the weather forecast is looking better. Getting over to our usual roads from HP will take some doing. I've been looking at a map and thinkin' about options.

Walden Pond metric Century

Well I finally got out to Concord and visit Walden Pond today! I started at the Depot park in Bedford and rode the Reformatory rail trail (unimproved dirt rail bed) to Concord Center and from there rode out to Sudbury-Hudson-Bolton-Harvard-Boxborough-Stow-South Acton-Maynard-Sudbury-Concord-Bedford.

There was a very nice cemetery in Concord, which I couldn't resist recording.

There were plenty of historical cemeteries which i passed that I would have liked to investigate further, but no time today.

Walden Pond

Since jimmuller suggested riding in this area, I picked up a copy of Walden and have been reading it whenever I get a chance. This is my second time through it but I'm being more deliberate this time through. He can live deliberately, I can read deliberately. I had all these grandiose plans to make little side excursions to Flint Pond and White Pond as well, which Thoreau discusses, but had to abandon them. It just wasn't feasible given my time constraints.

A few miles before I took a wrong turn. South Acton-ish. Anyway, this was at South Acton Rd.

This entire area was a hot bed of cycling activity. Road riders everywhere! Even out on these tiny little rural roads. I rode with a guy on the Reformatory Rail Trail who had a pretty nice carbon fiber Giant. He said to me, "What is that; a sock under your saddle?" I tried to explain that was the old school way to protect tubular tires. He just looked at me skeptically.

I got lost in South Acton/Maynard following blazons instead of my cue sheet and time was getting tight so I had to hop on a major state road and put the hammer down to get home on time. Odometer read 65 miles. Unintentional metric century. I had to double back 3 or 4 times to find the right road at different stages during this ride.

What I didn't do was go to the Minute man National Historical Park. I meant to do that before I went back to Bedford but didn't have time. Oh well, an excuse to come here again. It was only an hour drive from Providence.

jimmuller, you're a lucky man to ride these roads regularly!

Highs were in the low 90s, but it was mid 80s at ride time. I was sweating like a fiend. The temps dropped after the storm rolled through. It wasn't too bad by me, but pretty bad up in Tucson (washed out roads, buckled pavement, etc). There was a similar storm the day before and it rained harder than I've ever seen out there. That's why I had the good sense to turn around when those clouds came at me.

Great riding out there.

FWIW, it was more pleasant there than it's been in Chicago lately! Lord knows that we could use the rain in the Midwest...

Yes, I do feel lucky to get to ride through such places. Sharon and I were just saying this on Sunday, noting how nice it is that the gummint maintains MM Natl Historical Park so well, and so close to home yet. Of course, lots of other riders seem to think so too, as you noticed.

Next time you can stop by the North Bridge (MM Natl Historical Park). And ride up through Carlisle. Give us a shout when you're coming through.

Nice trip write-up and pics. Your reports always make me feel like I've been there. Of course I have been to most of the places you wrote about this time.

Today she kept it locked. I wanted to make a run over to the Batteries Plus in Woburn to recycle a dead laptop battery. I intended to do it as the first ride on the Bertin, but Sharon said "Want to do it on the tandem?" Ah, yeah, sure, it will be a lot more work and take longer and I'm not sure what the roads, mostly suburban-ish highways, will be like, but yeah!

19.8 miles. A few significant hills. Safely done and we're back home having lunch!

I'm on vacation at my home in the Catskills of NY, and put together my first "Catskill Dirt Road Metric Century". It's my favorite dirt roads stitched together into a metric century with over 6700 ft of elevation gain and more than two thirds of the miles on dirt. Yesterday, I think I encountered less than 30 cars over the entire ride.

I rode for a bit less than an hour this evening. Lately I've been riding the Bianchi or the Masi most of the time. But you see, I intended just to ride over to the gym and return after dark, so I took the ol' faithful UO8 because it has lights. When I got to the gym I discovered I'd left my cable lock at home. So instead of going in to lift weights for some upper body work I just went for a ride. Now I remember why I rode that bike for so many years without feeling a pressing need to upgrade. Sure, it's heavier and not quite up to the standards of those other two or the Raleigh Gran Sport. But for an inexpensive bike it sure is nice. No wonder Peugeot sold so many of them. 40 years old, still a good ride.

+1 I assume you mean SPB's route. Those are some mighty fine looking dirt roads. Nice to see a place that appears not to have changed much for several decades or maybe lots more.

Sorry, missed this post. The bar tape is the Bike Ribbon brand from Loose Screws. I've got it on two bikes in white, the Trek with blue, a Gitane in black and the other Gitane in yellow (more like harvest gold). If you can't tell I really like the stuff.

+1 Wonderful ride, and great photography of the Catskills. Someone should organize a Catskills L'Eroica!
