Thanks PG The town is Clermont, NY. This is St. Lukes Episcopal Church, built in 1859. https://www.clermontny.org/st-lukes

I always enjoy your Maryland photos. I grew up in Hagerstown for a bit, and have good memories of the countryside.

Your Norman is one of those bikes that I'd just love to stumble upon at a garage sale or thrift store some day (if it rides as well as it looks you have my continuing envy).

Unfortunately my outdoor riding was again skunked this weekend. My face was pressed against the windows of the studio on breaks looking at our beautiful day today. On the bright side, I'm now qualified to teach indoor cycling at my local Y (ten blocks away), so the winter should not take the same toll as in prior years.
I'm not what I'd consider a great climber, but I no longer push my bike up the hills. I've seen some places like that which you describe, and I don't envy you by any means. The issue with where I live is that there is no way to get out of my town other than up hills unless you are willing to take the C&O Canal towpath which is flat and mostly straight. As far as the Norman goes, she's one hella good rider and gets lots of comments from guys in the bike club I've been doing some rides with of late, with most people amazed that I'm riding a bike with only 4 gears! I'd love to stumble on another Norman bicycle, but they're nearly as scarce as hen's teeth.

Keep on riding and spinning and you'll be ready for next year. I'm sure you'll get some personal satisfaction from teaching at the Y.

A little bit o' single track, eh? In my mind, beer is a perfect complement to a ride, whether before, during or after.

I am envious that you can manage those kinds of speeds! If I can average 15 MPH, I think I'm doing well. I'm guessing that the weather that we had Saturday, pushed up into your region as it sounds nearly exactly like what we experienced.

Though I've passed near that area in the past, I don't think I've actually been through Clermont. Next time I'm in the area, I will try to remember and take a detour.

Thanks for the comment on my pictures. They're not usually that good tecnically, but I try to capture a little bit of the ride, to the extent possible. On this ride last weekend, we actually zig-zagged across the Frederick/Washington County line a couple times as we rode through the Catoctins. I have yet to ride to Hagerstown, but I've come within spitting distance.

I got out for about 1hr15min this afternoon as an extended lunchtime run. Waltham, Belmont, Arlington, Alewife, back out to Lexington, back home. I can't tell you how far it was because the bikes doesn't have a computer and I haven't had time to work it out on a map.

My sweetie said "Take the Masi out for a spin. Have fun and be careful." That's like saying "Eat all you want and save room for dinner." Okay, so maybe being careful really is a good idea.

I also got out for my standard lunch time 22.7 mile ride - 35 degrees F at the start with some wet roads. The sun came up and the low clouds disappeared, roads dried out so it ended up being a rather nice ride.

Tristate century

I rode 117 miles today. elevation gain 3432' I figured I would take advantage of the weather and the sunlight before it slipped away. Start was 45 and cloudy, temp rose to low 60s and sunny. RI-CT-MA-CT-RI
I rode through a bunch of new towns.

Glocester RI

Thompson CT

Red White School House Woodstock CT

So the placard in front of the building said that this is the first and last of the 13 one room school houses in Wooidstock. It was founded in 1705 and was painted red until it burned in 1873. When they built this structure to replace it they painted it white. All the town folk called it the red white school house after that, sic the name. If you look close you can see my De Rosa. I had a pbj break on the steps.

Abington CT Congregational church built 1751. The oldest standing continuously used church in CT.

Hampton CT

Plainfield CT

hexagonal painted rock with American flag on each side with sickle and hammer imposed on top. Weird.

I didn't take any pictures in MA, but I did stop at a bike shop in Southbridge to ask for directions and talked for a while with the owner who was very gregarious.

JJS, you always report the most interesting rides and pics! One of these days I'll have to drag the Masi down to RI and dig you up. It'll have to be the Masi if I want to keep up with you.

We did 20.27 miles on the tandem today. Bright blue sky, bright leaves on the ground as well as in the trees, and a possible hurricane threat over the next few days. This must be autumn.

Today I took a vacation day and we rode the Nashua River Rail Trail and some roads in Dunstable and Pepperell. 52.8 miles, not a bad day. It started under white skies but eventually the blue came out.

We passed one field in Dunstable that had 10ft high cornstalks the last time we went through, but this time it had been planted with winter rye to restore the ground nitrogen. At the far end of the field we found preparations for Thanksgiving Day dinner:

Saw lots of bright color. For example, at the northern end, just into New Hampshire:

And of course we had the obligatory lunch:

Another two-way transit of the Minuteman bike path, 20.6mi. Lots of Brownian (i.e. random) motion by the bi-peds. Saw a bike towing a canoe, followed by another bike towing a rowboat. It was crazy.

Also I noticed a stress crack forming down the center of the rear rim. Time to rebuild that wheel. Something to do during the storm.

Rides from most boring to most interesting this weekend.
- First an hour on an indoor cycling bike before sun up.
- Later that afternoon, 20 miles on my usual Afton climbing route (liking the Sugino AT on the trek 630 with the 28 granny, but need to fix a creaky bottom bracket - which is a new sealed unit, this is perplexing).
- Finally another 8-10 miles riding yesterday on an old three speed Huffy mixtie getting around the gun club (I was a supervising range officer, so needed to bounce from range to range all day to keep tabs on things). Pulled the mixtie from the scrap bin where someone had left it for recycling, fixed a couple things, pumped up the tires, viola). Sort of odd, me riding a green mixtie around the club against the backdrop of hunters and the constant gunfire. Yes, I took some guff for it, but would do it again. Love those old three speeds, and it beat walking for sure.

And good luck through the hurricane, to those out east.

I just spent an hour on the bike, but it was on a trainer in my livingroom. Outside the wind is howling and the rain is falling. An open window a few from my face let me feel the wind in my hair. The scenery changed entertainingly because thanks to a hi-def TV right in front of the bike I could watch Star Trek Next Generation via Netflix. Plus, I got to ride my Raleigh Gran Sport, a bike which as been feeling neglected lately.

Ok - now this is really funny - I'm getting ready to get on the indoor trainer because the wind is howling (the rain is holding off right now) and I was ready to fire up Star Trek TNG on Netflix.

Because of the hurricane I've been riding a bike on a trainer for the last three days, an hour a day. But I think the cyclo-computer is broken because it says I haven't gone anywhere. Same with my GPS. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe they need new batteries?

JScaliger - great shots of the roads. Looks like a lot of fun.

Mid-50's here also - got in 25 miles for lunch with the Spectrum and the newly installed Suntour Sprint crankset. I definitely could feel a difference - not sure why because my legs were tired from yesterday. The cranks actually don't seat as far in as the Sakae CR ones did and maybe that's the difference. Great, fast ride on a wonderful bike.

49.7 miles on the tandem. (When will I ever get to ride solo again? ) Long story, long trip sort of. We went out with a neighbor on his Serotta. His wife was hoping to go to a newly-opened garden center, and after our lunch break I suggested we head down to some roads in that direction and eventually we all decided to go by that garden center and meet her. Everybody ended up happy.
