I can't keep with all this wonderful picture-taking. It's that time of year, I guess!

I did my commute today. I didn't bike in earlier this week because I'd had to attend meetings a 9AM and the earliest I can get in if I catch the early train is about 9:10. But the guy running the meetings said he wouldn't mind if I came in 15 min late so I rode in today. It was supposed to rain but it didn't! So it was great!

Today I saw two other bikes on the run home. I never see anyone else. One guy showed up behind me as I was turning on to the swoopy downhill run on Wilbur Rd. I couldn't see what kind of bike he was on but he had a preference for riding on the left side of the road. He caught up with me a little near the top, but after I'd done the fast section he was nowhere to be seen. Then I noticed him way back as I was crossing rt.246 at the bottom of the hill. Don't know where he went. The other guy was on a road bike going the other way. We waved and went on our merry ways.

I went on a 26 mile hilly ride with my brother-in-law. Low 60s with a steady light rain most of the way. Bone-chilling weather for this tropical blood. Two layers of technical long underwear under my windbreaker, and I could have used a third. Wool socks. A stocking cap under my helmet, and pulled down over my ears. He just rolled his eyes. Rockingham County, Va. It was a great ride, but I'm more than ready to return to the sultry heat of Yucatán.

Lol, you look like you are dressed for January, not a balmy 60 in October. I don't blame you though, I would much rather be riding the Yucatan Peninsula starting around this time of year.

Had to drop my son off at a 2 hour event up in Clearwater today, and rather than drive back home, turn around and drive back, I threw my Bridgestone in the car to explore the Northern end of the Pinellas Traill (rails to trails). Rode Clearwater to Tarpon and back in time to P/U. A bit warm, 85 by the time I was done, and a bit of a breeze in the more exposed areas of the trail.
28.24 miles, 1:40:03 time, 16.94 mph avg speed. Need to adjust something, I find my lower back getting "HOT" after about 10 miles...Saddle tilt perhaps?

You look miserable.
And I can't blame you. It is quite remarkable how our bodies acclimate to our environment. Coming from cold weather beginnings, I scoffed at the Phoenix locals when it dropped to 50F and I was in a t-shirt. After 4 years, I get chills if I'm not riding in long sleeved garments when it is around 70F !
All I can say is the weather is ideal now for me, and I'm off for a ride in blue skies and 80F!

We rode the 3rd C&V Cape Cod Rail Trail ride today, about 49 miles round trip including a run over to the Atlantic. Riding were several C&V regulars and some friends of ours.

Rode 21 mile round trip to Clare , Mi. Wanted a decent cup of coffee
from the Cop's and Doughnuts bakery there. There was a good wind
making it tough on the way there. But was real nice on the way back.
Probably the last chance I will get to ride before the SNOW fly's.

I did 70.1 miles on the Masi today, had some interesting experiences. First, the only pic, showing the changing trees:



A little short of mile 20 I stopped at Great Brook Farm State Park and fell into a conversation with three cyclist ogling the Masi. That was fun.

Not so fun was about mile 35 when the chain broke. Actually the PowerLink seems to have separated. Not sure how. I found one piece still on the chain, the other lost forever. I spent 20 minutes looking up and down the road looking. So I decided to hoof it into my intended turnaround point a mile away where there was bike shop which might be open. Then I spotted a mailbox set up on an old Raleigh frame. We had noticed that mailbox before when we rode the tandem that way. Someone was on a riding mower across the road so I hailed him and asked if he was a cyclist. He said no, that was his neighbor's mailbox, a guy who rode a lot and had just returned so he should be home. So I walked up his driveway into the woods and rang the bell of the house in a clearing at the end of the driveway. An older fellow with longish gray hair answered the door and immediately said bring the bike around to the garage and we'd fix it. First he offered a PowerLink but his were for 10-speed chains, the pins too short for mine. Then he pulled out a well-used chaintool and I just popped the chain ends back together, two links smaller of course. During this time we kept up a continuing conversation about old bikes and new. He showed me his Bianchi track bike with chainring so worn that the teeth were just pointed spikes. I thanked him for the help, he said it was payback for all the people who'd helped him through the years.

Then on the return I stopped at Great Brook Farm again and was recognized by another BF member. We spent a few minutes talking then I begged off to head for home. I was already later than I wanted to be! When I got home my GPS read 70.1 miles, 13.9mph moving average. Not a bad day.

Busy weekend. Did 25 miles of mountain biking yesterday on two different trails. Then came home to find out my daughter had signed me up for a 5k run that afternoon. This morning taught my Sunday AM cycle class, happily losing the soreness caused by the run. Then did 32 relatively easy miles this afternoon over east side bike trails.

Photos of stops at local lakes including Phalen and Demontreville. Finally one of my recently built MTB that rides like a dream for a rigid bike. Already thinking of some studded tires for this winter.

26 miles, Monterey to Pebble Beach via 17 Mile Drive with a bunch of folks from the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club.
Mine was the only C & V bike there, and it got a lot of attention. Very brisk and foggy in the AM-around 45 F, eventually clearing and getting up to a balmy mid 60s. Monterey was hopping this afternoon.

Soon, the fenders will go back on...

This weekend's riding found me doing a night outing of 15 miles around the neighborhood on my Benotto. A balmy breezy evening, testing my 1200 lumen CREE headlight. I doubt it was 1200, but it was plenty bright.

Sunday I felt more adventurous and decided to take my Specialized Hardrock Cruz drop bar mtb for its first ride. It's missing a shifter, so it's a 42x15 single speed at the moment. I though it would be fine to do some gravel grinding on an unexplored canal path through the desert. I started late afternoon but should have enough light to safely ride.
The Eastern Canal is one of many in the Valley. It crosses a few miles from my neighborhood. I picked it up and headed northeast to its end at the source of its water, the Granite Reef Dam. The ride was very desolate and I felt a strong sense of isolation. I was the only soul for miles. It was so quiet in the desert. The path was rutted and washboarded and appeared there hasn't been anyone through there in a long while. It was a hard workout for the Hardrock. I had 1.95" tires, but hybrid tires more suited to tarmac. The front Specialized Crossroads II managed to bite into the trail and provided traction when I needed. There were large stones to dodge too. But the bike proved its worth.

I reached the end at the dam. The whole area looked deserted, but it was a Sunday evening. There were no trespassing signs and gates everywhere. I know there is an entrance to the site from a road. I had to look for it to make my exit or ride back down the canal path.
I found my way out of the facility, but faced a 1/2-mile climb to get home. And here's when my single speed idea backfired. I ended up walking up the hill for 1/4 mile in the dark, cars passing me by on this 2 lane highway. No one stopped to ask if I needed help, to my surprise. At the top, I jumped back on and rode the remaining miles home, fortunately all downhill and flat. 20 miles in total.

Thanks Jeff! We've been blessed with incredibly cool temps this month, caught me by surprise. Scrambling to prep bikes for the early riding season. RFC posted a ride along the Arizona Canal to its start at the Dam. It starts from the north side of the Salt River in the last photo. It intrigued me with its meandering through Indian reservation land, tens of miles from everything, no exits...total isolation. Now that I discovered the access route, I plan to do this trail from Mesa to Scottsdale.
Where it pops out in Scottsdale, there is a great Italian place called Andreoli's. Should be a nice reward after a heck of a gravel grinding adventure. Stay tuned for a report on that.

DD, this is the Middle Fork Road just outside of North Bend. It soon turns to gravel and gets quite rough in places.

I have posted pictures of this road numerous times in this thread. It's great place to find rattles in your fenders. Mine were completely silent. :-)

Yesterday, I had grand plans to drive out to Reedsburg WI to take the 400 State Trail.

When I got up to take the little girl to school, it was 36 out. So I kind of wussed. Then I realized that it's around an hour and a half drive to get there- I'd ride for 3-5 hours and drive an hour and a half to get home. So I totally wussed. Finally went on a short ride on the route I always ride.
