Low 20's today, but less wind than yesterday. First ride with pics of the year, and the first real ride on the Poprad. Need to sort the FD a bit, and maybe get a bit longer stem, but it goes along nicely. Having the large gravel tires was nice on pavement as well given all the sand and pea gravel spread out by the highway crews. Managed around 25 miles, with some of my usual summertime climbs mixed in during the pavement sections.

Along the St Croix in Afton, and up the valley.



Roads were good here.


Some sketchy road conditions, especially when climbing on kinda icy. But, kept it upright so all good.

Oakwood Ohio, to the University of Dayton, to the river in Downtown Dayton, to Xenia, and back to Oakwood.
I thought I heard 60's for temps - but it was below freezing and windy.
Wonderful ride nonetheless.

I saw a quote a while back on FB - "I do not ride to add years to my life, but to add life to my years". That is true.
Riding along beautiful paths, no one else out enjoying the outdoors because it is cold, grey and windy, and me fighting with myself against cold, wind and a little out of shape - made me really appreciate the day!

Glad winter is over.

This bike's been hibernating since October. I got out on it this morning and dropped into the valley for a nice ride. Rides even better than I remember.

It was up around 70 for the ride home from work on Monday.
I took some alternate routes that added an extra hour or so.
Miles of dirt n gravel like this:

There was a trail closure at one point. A rider descending stopped and told me that part of the road slid away up ahead but it wasn't too bad so I kept going, I walked around the washout and took this from the uphill side looking backwards

The damage from the rain we've had recently is pretty isolated compared to the areas North of where I live. That big slide that's been in the news occurred about 60 miles away.

Can't wait to get back to riding, sprained wrist from mtb fall still healing. At least my bike is mended and ready.
(I think I'm going to try commuting to work by bike. 17 miles of urban traffic each way, tho')

Off to derwent reservoir out of the back of manchester, snake pass x 2 meant a 5000 ft climb over a 45 mile effort.
a bit of history here, the famed 'dam busters' of ww2 used this dam to hone their skills with the new bouncing bomb.
anyhow, tough ride but well worth it.

Yesterday I rode from Bear Creek dog park to just past the 4th tunnel up Lower Gold Camp Road here in Co. Springs, it was a beautiful day and I had a great time. I was wishing I had taken the time to put the knobby tires on my bike, the last five miles up the dirt was pretty soft and there were still patches of pretty deep snow. This road is closed to vehicular traffic beyond a certain point which makes it great for cycling. Just before leaving on my ride I was reading about how these Gold Camp road tunnels are rumored to be haunted. I don't buy into that sort of thing in general, but I have to admit it was a little eerie riding through that 4th tunnel out in the he middle of no where by myself. It was really dark inside and the dirt was soft, I was really glad I made it through in a hurry without having to get off my bike, the tunnel is a fair amount longer than it looks in the picture.

Friday of last week, I took a ride in the country to the hardware store to pick up a smoke detector. I had limited time because my dog was at the vet, and I had to pick her up with the car. So I rode like a bat out of hell, which was just what the doctor ordered. I rode my 1982 McLean with mostly Campagnolo Nuovo Record components.

This is Marbletown, NY, which contains the hamlets of High Falls and Alligerville.

Thanks, I wish you could have been there. Most of the time when I go on on of these beautiful mountain rides by myself I end up wishing I had somebody to share the experience with. As soon as my wife gets home from the store so she can watch my son I am going to head out to do some more exploring.

I love the river scenery, one thing I miss living here in Colorado is the water. The mountains are beautiful here but it is dry.

I hope you guys don't mind if post a few more pics of my Colorado Front Range rides, i've had some time off this week and have been having blast in the mountains:

This picture is from two days ago, I finally got a chance hit some fun single track on my drop bar mountain bike:


Yesterday I went for a pretty epic gravel grinder ride, about 40 miles over Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road in Colorado springs to the historic Gold mining town of Victor. The road is currently closed to traffic so I didn't see a see a soul for about 30 miles. I met my wife and son in Victor for lunch and rode back home with them in the mini-van.

This was about 7 miles into the ride, the climb to this point was pretty brutal, about 3000 ft in those 7, this was at about 9,200 ft. Beyond this the road continued to climb another 1000 ft or so for the next few miles. After about mile 11 the ride got more moderate with mostly rolling hills.

The historic town of Victor, this town is really neat, it currently has a population of about 420 or so, it is clearly a poor town but was apparently very prosperous in the early 1900's due to Gold abounding:






Next time I do this ride I am going to go both ways, it was fun to meet my family in Victor but it would have been a fun, fast ride back to Colorado Springs, it's almost all downhill.
