Some recent rides have been in rural Indiana, northeast of Indianapolis, on county roads and through small towns. The fields and woods are plain this time of year, but the towns offer rich reflections of a past time; these once thriving communities had railroad access to facilitate various enterprises such as as grain processing.



Our bikes allow us to travel into the past in a way thats fun and interesting. Riding slowly can be very rewarding.

Yeah, we've got a lot to pack in to a small island! Three minutes after the second photo was taken (along the famous Pilgrim's Way) I had a very close call with a tractor coming the other way. Now that the days are getting longer I'm planning my first century ride for a very long time, via Brighton, so I'll be hitting a few of those Sussex lanes. Lovely part of the world.

I did my commute today. After yesterday's 55 miles the legs felt heavy. Worst problem was the wind. With the storm offshore we had wind from the NE, a direction that it rarely sees except for storms. Of course that was a headwind. On the ride home the wind had shifted. Tomorrow's weather coming in. Winds over 20mph, gusting up near 30. Of course it was a headwind. The run home took 1hr15min when it usually takes only 1hr5min.

I had to drop to the small chainring for much of the way, in spots even needing my lowest gear just to keep moving. The big hill between Woburn and Lexington was brutal. Of course I didn't have to breathe. Just open my mouth and the air comes in all by itself.

Did another napa to Sonoma and back ride. This time with the gf! Let's just say that if she had the tiniest clue about the Paris-Roubaix race, she would have equated that famous ride to today's route. The roads are pretty awful. But the scenery is second to very few. From the rolling hills covered in vineyards, to the vast marshland towards the bay, the steep valley walls on either side, leading to quaint Sonoma country side. Everything is green and gorgeous.
No pics today, but essentially the same as a few weeks back, with more growth.

I went for a nice 20 km ride and stopped midway to have a coffee with my buddy Ben... you really don't have to worry about your stuff if he is watching it for you.

He weighs 20 more pounds than I do...

Took the Moulden out for it's first ride of the season today and it was my best ride of the season... damn this thing is fast.

Looks like a Leonberger. I came across one on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes last summer. Great looking dog.

In Spokane WA for work for a couple of days. Got in 33 miles today on the Spectrum. Took some photos but they were cruddy so no posting. Nice headwind on the way south but a great tailwind back into town.

Ben is a 4 year old Leonberger / Mastiff cross... he is about as easy going a dog that I have ever met.

I got out long enough to get soaked. When I rolled out of the driveway, it was only cloudy so I didn't bother grabbing a jacket. About 15 minutes into the ride I felt a couple drops, and it continued to rain a little harder from there. 20 minutes later a pretty good squall passed through. I found shelter here until it passed and then peeled up the hill for home.

We had amazing weather here Sunday, so I set out to ride halfway around Lake Whatcom. North Shore Road ends at a trail, and I wanted to investigate it. On my way I happened to run into a coworker/friend and she happened to also be on her bike, so she joined me. She rode with me for about 19 miles (which is more than she thought she was capable of), and the entire ride was about 37.5. It was a good first "real" ride of the year.

No real distance today, just another 30 minutes grabbed for road time during lunch break.

Cutting through a Shopping centerUsed the Raleigh SS this day. Switch the back brake pads to KoolStop for a comparison test between the old DC pads. Both do a great job but the DC feel spongier compared to the KS and they leave brake residue on the wheel ans forks.

Nice weather for the ride with mid 60's slight wind and lots of sunshine. Wished I could have gone longer. Love the looks I get from the customers when I stroll back into work carrying the bike.

Barbaric commute in this morning. Strong 30deg headwind, ice, slush, and snow on the road shoulders. Lots of people chipping ice off their windshields. Traffic was light; everybody was still home chipping ice!

Much nicer ride home, still cold but with a tailwind.

I just replaced the front wheel and the tires on my (probably vintage!) Finnish trekking bike. It's my first experience with an internally geared hub (Shimano Inter-7), and I love it.



Feels much better with good tires and everything rattles a lot less now that the galvanized hardware has been replaced with stainless. The cobblestones can still be ruthless.

I'm not sure I can ever find the place with the blooming trees again! Both photos taken in (or near) Lund, Sweden.

Nothing epic - just around 25 miles after dropping off the car again after I decided to go the whole hog and replace the rear rotors/pads as part of my pre-road-trip preventive maintenance kick.

However, I made a nice discovery when just a couple of miles from home: a brand-new GoPro Hero 3+ that was at the side of the road. I figure someone on a bike was listening to music and didn't notice when it fell off. The attachment piece was broken, so perhaps it failed before hitting the ground.

I've got a plan that might get this back to the rightful owner, but it's a long shot...
